The value of this program challenges individuals to aim higher in their development of leadership skills, facilitating the emergence of leaders in both private and public endeavors. The resources of current leaders in the community assist in educating and fulfilling the mission of the program. Over the course of a year, members of Leadership Mainland participate in monthly sessions that focus on the communities in which they live and work. Day-long sessions and tours on subjects such as city and county gov- ernment, the petrochemical industry, economic development, media, health care and the Port of Texas City expose class members to subjects to enhance their careers and personal perspectives. The sessions also introduce partici- pants to key industry and civic leaders that may be of help to them along their career paths. The class is composed of 20-25 peo- ple and is chaired by former graduates of the Leadership Mainland program. Applications are available in December, and the class members are selected in January. Upon enrollment, a $950 tuition fee entitles participants to local and out-of-town transportation, meals, logo shirt, supplies and a graduation plaque. “Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress. The retiring directors include: • Kevin Bogard, Marathon Petroleum • Josh Chapman, Chapman’s Front End & Brakes • Gail Figueroa, AMOCO Federal Credit Union • Felix Herrera, Awesome Auto Accessories • Sam Navarro, IPC Industries • Ray Nunez, Taylor & Hill Engineering • Rusty Plackemeier, Lyons & Plackemeier These volunteer leaders have been valuable members of committees and projects over the past three years.
