As a practicing attorney, I had the pleasure of working in the 405th District Court as both an assistant district attorney and private practice attorney. I wanted to continue the legacy of the first two judges of this court by administering justice in a professional and ethical manner. What strengths or experience do you bring? I have invaluable trial and litigation experience. As an attorney, I tried nearly 100 jury trials in courts all throughout Texas, in Federal Court, and in military courts. I have worked as a prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, and civil litigation attorney. I also helped create the Veteran’s Treatment Court. If elected, which issues do you plan to give highest priority? Why? I plan to work diligently to help erase the massive backlog of cases created by the Covid-19 shutdown which prevented courts from holding jury trials for nearly 7 months. What is your vision for the future of your city? I envision the Galveston County Justice Center being the premier courthouse in the State of Texas. Between the exceptional judges, attorneys, court staff and support personnel, Galveston County is able to provide the highest level court services in the state. ELECTED OFFICES HELD (include dates in office): None POLITICAL PARTY: Democratic Party What motivated you to run for this office? Texas is ranked in the bottom in public education, top in property tax burden, #1 in number of uninsured Texans, #1 in rural healthcare clinics/hospitals that have closed and at the bottom in Mental health care funding. The status quo is not working and we need change in Austin. What strengths or experience do you bring? I was a military officer that lead people from every walk of life and we need leaders that are willing to listen and work for what is best for everyone, not just a base. I’m an independent thinker and believe in facts and data. If elected, which issues do you plan to give highest priority? Why? Medicaid expansion, so we can help eliminate the healthcare coverage gap and ensure availability, especially for those in rural areas. Closing loop holes in our tax laws so we can create long-term funding solutions for public education and reduce property tax burden. What is your vision for the future of your city? I want to see a Senate District that has representation for all of the people in the district and who is open and transparent. I want to see Texas move forward and quit moving backwards and I want to see people treated as more important than corporations and special interests. What do you think about the property the tax rate? And if it’s too high where would you propose to make budget cuts? Property taxes are too high across Texas. We need to have long-term funding solutions for public education and the state contribute the appropriate percentage to public education to ease the burden on hard-working Texans. We do not fix property tax burden without fixing public education funding from the state. Is there any other information you would like to share with voters? I want to pass laws that make life better for everyone and not just the privileged few. I am concerned about our state government becoming more secretive. Big corporations and wealthy donors are taken well care of while the less powerful are ignored. What strengths or experience do you bring? As a former judge, former prosecutor and an attorney I see firsthand how laws apply in ways unintended and intended. I see where changes should be made. If elected, which issues do you plan to give highest priority? Why? Criminal Justice Reform, Public Education, and Access to Healthcare are the biggest but not only priorities. These are all in crisis mode and as a result people are suffering greatly and unnecessarily What is your vision for the future of your city? Rogers, pllc to help people going through tough times. ELECTED OFFICES HELD (include dates in office): N/A POLITICAL PARTY: Democrat What motivated you to run for this office? No one should ge t a free shot at a legislative seat. I’m a Democrat and the only person in the race was a Republican and since I disagree with the inflexible and uncooperative way that Republicans have run the state, I felt that challenging the seat was important. What strengths or experience do you bring? As an experienced mediator, I work with both sides of a disagreement to find solutions that help both sides. As an experienced attorney, I know how to write laws that don’t have the unintended consequences that a few poorly thought out laws have had on our cities lately. If elected, which issues do you plan to give highest priority? Why? Every Texan should have affordable access to healthcare, which would easily be possible if Republicans stopped blocking the federal funds that Texas is entitled to under the Affordable Care Act. It’s being blocked because Republicans in state government want Texans to believe the ACA doesn’t work What is your vision for the future of your city? My vision for my district and Galveston county and Texas is one where people can get the help they need, whether it is affordable healthcare, drug rehabilitation instead of jailtime and accurate scientific information and common-sense guidelines from our state leaders. A place where government works for the people. What do you think about the property the tax rate? And if it’s too high where would you propose to make budget cuts? People are wising up that tax rates, whether it’s property taxes, municipal taxes, different state taxes, federal taxes and even sales taxes are just a shell game where politicians to claim they cut taxes while raising taxes elsewhere. We need to cut spending first, then work on tax equity. Is there any other information you would like to share with voters? I’m from a small, isolated town in West Texas where people of different ages, educations, backgrounds, races and dispositions get along because they all understand that “community” means we are all in this together. We all have to work together to make our communities better. And I pledge here that if I lose this race, I will still to work with anyone in any party to make the community better because that is what’s most important.www.votesalinas.com “Time for a New Direction in Law Enforcement” Political Advertisement paid for by : The Mark Salinas Campaign, Michelle Salinas , treasurer October 2020 | Election Guide | The Daily News | 7 PAID ADVERTISEMENT SHERIFF Are you a legal resident of the district you’re seeking to represent? Is there any other information you would like to share with voters? I want to earn the vote from the people of Galveston County and I think it is important for them to learn a little bit about me. I was raised by a single parent in a working class family after losing my mother to violent crime. From a very early age I learned the value of hard work and perseverance. As a result I was able to attend college on an Army ROTC Scholarship where I earned a B.S. in Criminal Justice and upon graduation was commissioned in the United States Army. During this time I had the honor of leading American Soldiers in the hostile lands of Afghanistan and Iraq. My family and I returned home to Houston where I attended law school at South Texas College of Law and began my legal career at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. At the HCDAO, I have personally overseen thousands of cases to disposition. I am asking the folks of Galveston County for their vote because coming from humble beginnings I have seen first-hand how the legal system affects all aspects of people from varying social-economic backgrounds and experiences, and because of my experiences folks can trust that I will use this knowledge and experience daily in the application of the law.
