Yes JASON HARDCASTLE AGE: 41 RESIDENCE: Galveston OCCUPATION: Financial Advisor ELECTED OFFICES HELD (include dates in office): Galveston City Council District 4 (2018-present) POLITICAL PARTY: Independent Capitalist What motivated you to run for this office? I am very grateful for my District 4 neighbors’ support over the last 2.5 years, and especially the relationships that have developed. I look forward to continuing our progress, particularly in respect to our infrastructure improvements, park investments, public safety support, and the promotion of economic development. What strengths or experience do you bring? When asked this question in the past, whether it relates to my professional career or elected position, I believe the common thread is, connecting people to resources. By listening and relating to others, I can then feel confident to determine the best courses of actions. If elected, which issues do you plan to give highest priority? Why? Working with our professional city staff, I plan to continue to prioritize our focus on infrastructure improvements, enhancing our public safety, investing in our city parks, and attracting economic development. Additionally, I aim to provide appropriate support to our Wharves Board and Park Board, with their respective community contributions. What is your vision for the future of your city? From day one as a 2018 city council candidate, I have shared my broad vision of our future together: a preeminent coastal destination for both residents and tourists. Based on the recent acceleration in innovations the preceding months have required, I also believe Galveston is uniquely positioned to capitalize, economically. What do you think about the property the tax rate? And if it’s too high where would you propose to make budget cuts? After months of city budget and capital improvement plan discussions with our outstanding city staff, I am proud of supporting the tax rate decrease that passed unanimously. Additionally, based on the lack of dissent from constituents and affirmation from objective credit ratings agencies, I am satisfied with our tax rate. Is there any other information you would like to share with voters? I would like to again express gratitude to the residents of District 4 for their support over the last 2.5 years, as well as Galveston residents across the island. It has been a perpetual learning experience, especially as challenges inevitably evolve. In my perspective, this role is to provide direction and make decisions. While there is always room for improvements and increased efficiencies, I am proud of my record and our accomplishments together, working with our city council and staff. I have lived full time in District 6 for 40 years Have you ever been convicted of a crime? no Have you ever sued a public entity or been sued by one? If you answer yes, please explain. I have never been sued by a public entity. I, Elizabeth Beeton and Jos Wristers sued the Redevelopment Authority in 2015 over violations of the Open Meetings Act, resulting in a one-sided agreement favoring the TIRZ 13 developer. Do you have any unpaid property taxes or federal income taxes? no Do you have any unpaid parking tickets? no Do you have any other debts to a public entity? no Will your home or cellphone number be listed where constituents can find it? yes JACKIE COLE AGE: 71 RESIDENCE: Galveston OCCUPATION: Retired Veterinarian and small business owner ELECTED OFFICES HELD (include dates in office): Galveston City Council District 6, 2004-2007; Galveston City Council District 6, 2018-2020 POLITICAL PARTY: non-partisan race What motivated you to run for this office? I am running to make sure that the voice of the residents is heard on Council. I’m also running to ensure government transparency and financial responsibility. What strengths or experience do you bring? I served on Council from 2004-2007 and since 2018, giving me insights into government that I can use to defend the interests of my constituents. My 30 years as a business owner gives me a strong grasp of budgets and fiscal responsibility. I listen and do my homework. If elected, which issues do you plan to give highest priority? Why? I will continue to advocate for capital improvement projects that benefit District 6, including the improvement of drainage and streets, strongly advocate for a RESTORE grant to convert septic tanks to sewers and watch the budget to keep taxes low while providing needed services. What is your vision for the future of your city? Galveston is a nature lovers’ paradise and will continue to attract people to live here who can live anywhere -- the retired and telecommuters. Galveston needs to learn ways to balance the tourist economy which helps pay our bills with the character of our neighborhoods. What do you think about the property the tax rate? And if it’s too high where would you propose to make budget cuts? Property taxes pay for police, fire, parks, infrastructure, Rosenberg Library and the buses. I want to keep the tax rate low, but not so low that it strangles city services. A well-functioning city government is important for the happiness of residents. Is there any other information you would like to share with voters? District 6 is unique and is facing some of the most challenging conditions on the Island, including street flooding from high tides and eroding beaches with heavy visitation. Mini-hotels masking as residences degrade the character of our neighborhoods. These are big issues and will require ongoing work to find potential solutions. I meet regularly with the city, Park Board and GLO to grapple with these issues and advocate for Galveston. I am proud of my record. Some accomplishments can be seen -like an ordinance meant to protect bicyclists and pedestrians and the new 5-acre dog park at 83rd near Schreiber Park. The City has repaved over 30,000 feet of streets in District 6 and is working through a west end drainage program. Other accomplishments can’t be seen-like fewer intrusive street lights in our natural areas, no zoning changes that would affect neighborhood character while still allowing business to operate according to plan. Literally unseen because it is underground, is over 40 million dollars in sewer and water infrastructure to fortify the West End services. Please vote for me, Jackie Cole, your voice on City Council. I am a full- time resident and will be your full- time representative.22 | The Daily News | Election Guide | October 2020 DATES AND TIMES • Oct. 13-16: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. • Oct. 19-23: 8 a.m. to 5: p.m. • Oct. 24: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. • Oct. 25: 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. • Oct. 26-30: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. POLLING PLACES Registered eligible voters can cast ballots at any of these polling places.
