The fair runs from April 14 to April 22 at Jack Brooks Park in Hitchcock, Texas. Rodeo action, carnival rides, livestock judging contests and a sea- food and barbecue cook-off competi- tion are all a part of the fair’s run. “Our headliners include William Clark Green, Josh Ward, David Lee Garza, Bag of Donuts, Jason Boland and Giovannie and the Hired Guns,” Thurmond said. “It is full of great entertainers and music that will hopefully bring everyone out to our fair.” ENTERTAINER LINE-UP Opening day, Friday, April 14, Jon Stork will be kicking things off. The Texas native is a fan favorite at the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo. He brings several Texas Music No. 1 hit songs to the stage. The Texas Music explosion continues with William Clark Green in concert later that evening around 10:30 p.m. The Texas Tech graduate will bring his singer-songwriting talents to the stage. His 2023 tour has him criss- crossing the Lone Star State. Josh Ward will be in concert Saturday, April 15. After a near-fatal horse-riding accident last year, Ward has been touring from Texas to the West Coast and will bring his unique vocal talent to the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo. These events offer a variety of activities specifically planned for each group and are held during the day when the grounds are closed to the general public. Local students and adult volunteers work together to make these days “special” for those who attend. SENIOR CITIZENS’ DAY Monday, April 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Senior Citizens ages 60 and older will enjoy a fun- filled day of free activities and fellowship at the fair. Activities include a social hour, prize drawings, mu- sic, barbecue lunch, dance contest and bingo. Senior Citizens 60 and older also will receive free admission on this day to the fair events that happen once the gates open at 4 p.m. SPECIAL KIDS’ DAY Tuesday, April 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Special Needs youth and adults from Galveston and surrounding counties will enjoy a day of fun- filled activities, including face painting, games, a special rodeo performance, carnival rides, a chance to see the animals and more. In order to provide the maximum experience for guests with special needs, only students in PPCD, self-contained classrooms, life skills/functional living, behavior units and adult residential and respite care programs are accepted on this day. SCHOOLS DAY Thursday, April 20 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Teachers from area preschools, daycares and schools with students up to sixth grade will be able to enjoy a day of free, fun and educational activities along with hay rides, face painting, games, exhibits and more during their trip to the fairgrounds. The Latin Grammy winner will headline this full day of Latin music. From tradi- tional Tejano music to Cumbia sounds, the Fiesta Sunday crowd will have plenty to en- joy. Chente Barrera, Raulito Navaria and Marcos Orozco will be part of the day’s entertainment lineup that begins at 3 p.m. The iconic cover band, Bag of Donuts, will return to the fair on Thursday, April 20. The band’s electrifying performance is a must-see and will get started at 8 p.m. The Okla- homa and Texas music movement ambassadors Jason Bo- land and the Stragglers will bring its talent Friday, April 21. Boland is a veteran songwriter with a string of top-charting hits. Texas Female Artist of the Decade Bri Bagwell will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. To close out the fair, Giovannie and the Hired Guns will make its debut. Rolling Stone magazine describes the band as a Latin-influ- enced five-piece band that is signed to a country music label but plays pop-punk. Matt Castillo, the pride of Edinburg, Texas, with phenomenal songwriting skills, will open on this night at 8:30 p.m. SCHOLARSHIPS In 2022, the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo awarded $56,845 worth of scholarships; more than $1.1 million was generated through its auctions for the youth. “Being able to support these kids as they pursue their educational goals is what our Fair is all about,” Thurmond said. “These kids are our future.” A sneak peek night will be avail- able Thursday, April 13, and is still being planned.
