A power line that’s down still can be energized and deadly, even if power is out nearby. • Call 911 if you see a downed power line. • Keep kids, pets – and adults – far away. • Avoid water on the ground near a downed line. Report power outages or get updates: 888-866-7456 How you can prepare: • Medical equipment users should evacuate and return after power has been restored. • Don’t try to power your entire house with a portable generator and read all manufacturer safety warnings before operating. • Before the storm, unplug unnecessary or sensitive electronics. • Electric garage doors won’t open without power; don’t forget a key. For 25 years, The Jesse Tree has sought opportunities to help the vulnerable among us and suddenly, a pandemic has rendered us all vulnerable! The following will guide you to: gather necessary documents, identify chronic health and so- cial challenges to prepare in the face of a worldwide pandemic for personal emergency, natural disaster, hurricane or living a healthier life with multiple, chronic conditions! Starting NOW is the key to success. It is not meant to be a compre- hensive display of all of the regional services, programs, resources and information — it’s a guide to some tried-and- true resources and services and a common sense approach to being prepared by; • Identifying medical issues that may require special planning during an evacuation • Introducing the con- cept of chronic social conditions that might complicate your ability to deal with chronic health issues • Suggesting a formula for managing these challeng- ing issues • Coming up with a robust, common-sense plan. Since its inception in 1995 in Galveston, Texas, The Jesse Tree has used technology to reduce travel, increase access to care and empower individuals and families to develop maximum independence and self-sufficien- cy. Today, nearly three-fourths of the world’s population owns a cellphone. In itself, this in- genious, affordable tool is like holding the Library of Congress in the palm of your hand. In addition to taking “sel- fies” and playing games, the phone will now assist in finding valuable information, seek- ing and managing resources and expanding access to care. For example, photographing important documents, licenses or prescriptions could result in saving both time and money when problems occur. Let’s hope and pray that we have a quiet hurricane season, but, in the event of a storm, let’s be better prepared than ever and let’s keep pandemic planning at the forefront; staying home, masks and gloves, social dis- tancing and oh yes, the ultimate weapon — common sense! Still here, after all these years… As a local, nonprofit, char- itable organization, The Jesse Tree, founded in 1995, depends upon loyal staff and volunteers to reach those in need. In 2008, our Bolivar Peninsu- la and Galveston facilities were destroyed by Hurricane Ike. We did not close our doors. In 2001, The Mainland Medical Center generously provided us with a facility on their cam- pus, in which we house the inventory of durable medical equipment, medical supplies and our offices. We continued to operate from there. As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, we have modified each program to prevent infection and have not had to cancel any activities. (We cannot accept medical equipment and supplies at this time without risking introduc- ing the COVID-19 infection into the existing inventory, so we will resume collecting these items when possible). In collaboration with The Galveston County Food Bank, we have continued to deliver monthly food boxes to the residents of Holland House, Gulf Breeze and The Oaks; host Food Fairs at New Life Fellow- ship on Heards Lane; provide multiple-chronic conditions management classes, The Health Equipment Loan Pro- gram (HELP) and the Survivors Support Network — a multi-dis- ciplinary team of well-trained individuals who are dispatched to the beach in the event of a drowning incident. David Mitchell, Director of Programs and Services; Jacque- line Dean, RN; Coordinator of the Multiple Chronic Conditions Management Program; Ana Rivera Sandoval, and Johnny Moses, Chronic Conditions Management Coaches bring many years of experience to this process. They see firsthand the results of those whose lives are transformed through com- passionate, chronic conditions management. Their expertise, enthusiasm, cultural sensitivity and dedication is simply amaz- ing. Hats off to a wonderful team!
