Jones’ idea struck a chord within his own group, the Business Circle of Chicago, and they authorized him to explore his concept with similar organizations. His efforts resulted in an organizational meeting on June 7, 1917. The 12 men who gathered there voted the “Association of Lions Clubs” into existence, and issued a call for a national convention to be held in Dallas that year. The first meeting of the League City Chapter of the Lions Club was called to order by president Phillip T. Wright at The League City Coffee Shop at 7 p.m. April 10, 1952. Twenty-two members were in attendance. Among the charitable activities receiving support from the League City chapter are Raising A Hand, Interfaith Caring Ministries, Clear Creek Independent School District FFA, Project Graduation, Bay Area Alliance, YMCA, Blue Santa, Helen Hall Library, Boy Scouts playground development for children with disabilities, Devereux Texas, “Courage of a Lion” Steve Nickolow, Texas Lions Camp, Lions Eye Bank, disaster relief aid, river blindness aid, hunger and medical assistance through Lions Club International Fund. The tax-deductible dollars invested by sponsors of the Texas Music Festival, coupled with the efforts of hundreds of tireless volunteers, makes it possible to stage this multi-day family event each year at Walter Hall Park in League City. Major sponsors include the city of League City, Miller Lite, Cervelle Homes and Ron Carterof League City. In honor of Lynn Gripon, a former prom-inent League City resident and Lions Club member, The Lions Club and the Gripon family are bringing back Lynn’s Beirgarten. In this tent, there is German food, beer and live music. Gripons from all over the state will don lederhosen and dirndls Thursday through Saturday. There also will be a Kids Day, when select children of all ages with physical challenges and certain types of diseases are invited to a day at the park, greeted by the Lions and volunteers. These chosen kids are treated to face painting, a petting zoo, carnival rides, bounce houses and more. Whataburger will provide lunch for all involved in this awesome effort. This special day is spearheaded by Emily Watkins. Bar-B-Q Cook OffA League City tradition and festival favorite“More than 100 teams will compete for cash prizes, making this Bar-B-Q Cook Off the largest in the county,” said Jason Long, Lions Club president and Bar-B-Q Cook Off chairman. The categories are simple, but the rewards will be amazing. People participating in a cook-off love to do just that — cook. Starting Wednesday, competitors bring campers to stay in with family and friends during the cook-off. They then head out Sunday morning. The food makes the entire festival smell awesome, and that alone often draws crowds to the area. The cook-off brings an additional 3,000 to 5,000 people to the park, raising more than an additional $20,000 a year.CATEGORIES• Salsa• Margarita• Beef Fajita• Chicken Fajita• Chili • Chicken • Ribs• BrisketSalsa, margarita, beef fajita and chicken fajita categories payouts go to those ranked first through third.BEST PORT-A-POTTY PRIZES• First ............................................... $700 • Second ......................................... $500• Third ............................................. $300• Fourth .......................................... $200• Fifth .............................................. $150• Sixth ............................................. $100• Seventh ....................................... $75• Eighth .......................................... $50• Ninth ............................................ $50• Tenth ............................................ $50COURTESY PHOTOSBEST OF SHOW WILLRECEIVE 50 PERCENTOF THE JACKPOT.
