Galveston takes pride in its cooking, service and creativity. From funnel cakes and filet mignon, to shrimp to shish kebobs, creative cuisine has been a trade-mark of Galveston since the 1920s and ’30s, when the island was considered the “Sin City of the Gulf,” and tourists flocked to the “Free State of Galveston.”Home to immigrants from Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean, Galveston has always reflected the flavors of their many differing cultures. That diversity keeps culinary curious visitors delicious-ly satiated. American, German, Indian, Mexican, Central American, Chilean, Italian — you name it — there’s likely a restaurant of fine dining stature or a food truck with authenticity to serve you. Being an island in the Gulf of Mexico, one of the first thing visitors think of is seafood, and no one has done it longer than Gaido’s. One of the oldest, most success-ful seafood restaurants on the island, Gaido’s opened in 1911. All of its sauces, salad dressings and desserts are home-made from Gaido family recipes. Located at 39th St. and Seawall, Gaido’s is a fixture for Galveston foodies. The pecan pie was voted “Best in Texas” by Texas Monthly several times. Downtown on the Strand, enjoy handcrafted pastas and authentic Northern Italian dishes lovingly prepared by Chef Rico at Riondo’s, or grab a tasty snack or brunch at Yaga’s Café, adjacent to Saengerfest Park. Jordan and Eva Weller work in the Weller family-run eclectic Gypsy Joynt on Market Street and 27th Street.2019 • Lone Star Rally • 7 For casual Italian, you can’t beat the multi-generation Maceo Spice & Import Com-pany, located at 2706 Market Street. Try the world famous New Orleans inspired Muffaletta sandwich: Imported salami, ham and provolone cheese on freshly baked Italian bread, with a specially-blended, family-secret olive dressing that will have you shouting “Fantastico” in no time. There are outstanding options if you’ve got a taste for Mexican food, including Salsa’s on the Seawall, Taquilo’s Tex-Mex and The Original Mexican Café on Market Street. The Original Mexican Café lives up to its name as it claims to be the oldest restaurant in its original location on the Island. Slow cooked, freshly prepared meals may take a little longer but oh are they are worth the wait! Being bold, brave and creative with a positive attitude is a trademark of Galvesto-nians and few places reflect the city’s unique culture of art and food the like The Gypsy Joynt on Market Street, with their sister location Jive on The Strand. The restaurant has been run by the Weller family since 2016 and features a made-to-or-der, bohemian-inspired array of pizzas, burgers, pastas and specialty coffees. Take a walk or ride just a few streets from The Strand and discover Postoffice Street and its host of restaurants, bars and eateries: Sky Bar Steak and Sushi, Gumbo Bar, Taquilo’s Tex-Mex, Vargas’ Cut and Catch, Rudy and Paco’s and Saltwater Grill. Turn the corner onto 21st Street, and check out Mama Teresa’s Flying Pizza — you will be glad you did. No matter what your taste, Galveston can satisfy. Google whatever you’re craving, and the choices will be abundant!Situated on the corner of 14th St. ad Market St., The Original Mexican Café has been in place more than 100 years.8 • Lone Star Rally • 2019Friday EventsFriday Events2019 • Lone Star Rally • 91 pm Zach Tate Band3 pm Creed Fisher5 pm ZZ37 pm Highway To Hell9 pm Scott Stapp Of Creed2 pm Piedmont Boys4 pm The Merle Travis Show6 pm Stone Senate8 pm Miss Intent10 pm Bobby FrissFriday EventsWATCH SCOTT STAPP OF CREED LIVE: 9 PM ON THE PROGRESSIVE STAGE AT BEACH CENTRALBUDWEISER STAGE AT SAENGERFEST PARKPROGRESSIVE STAGE AT BEACH CENTRALWATCH AC/DC TRIBUTE BAND HIGHWAY TO HELL LIVE: 7 PM ON THE PROGRESSIVE STAGE AT BEACH CENTRALNext >
