Set 15 years after “Justified” ended, the saga adapts another story by Elmore Leonard (“City Prime- val: High Noon in Detroit”) and newly factors Givens into it, with the U.S. marshal liv- ing in Miami after his time in Kentucky. A situation that develops in Florida leads him to Detroit and a vicious felon known as the Oklahoma Wildman (played by Boyd Holbrook, previously of “Narcos”), whose lawyer (“King Richard” Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis) has her own reasons for wanting to help her client elude the scales of justice. With Olyphant also an executive producer of the show along with author Leonard’s estate, “Justified: City Primeval” includes Ad- elaide Clemens (“Rectify”), Vondie Curtis-Hall (“The Recruit”), Marin Ireland (“Hell or High Water,” 2016), double Tony Award winner Norbert Leo Butz (“The Girl From Plainville”), Ravi Patel (“Animal Control) and Vivian Olyphant – the star’s daughter, who plays Givens’ offspring – among additional cast members. They’re new to the “Justified” world, as is actress Ellis, who felt she couldn’t go wrong with mate- rial that originally came from the mind of Leonard. “I just had a general fa- miliarity with ‘Justified,’” she says. “I knew it was an Elmore Leonard adaptation, and I was interested in that because I’m a big reader. Then, when I started working on this, I watched (the origi- nal show) and got to see Tim being ‘that guy.’ It was one of those things where you feel a character was written for somebody, even if the author did not have that person in mind. “There was a great singer named Phyllis Hyman, and Duke Ellington’s granddaugh- ter says that she believes he wrote his songs for Phyllis Hyman even before she was born,” Ellis explains. “There also are acting roles like that, and I just feel that Tim is the person who was meant to walk in these boots.” Much of the appeal for Ellis in playing attorney Car- olyn Wilder in “Justified: City Primeval” came from what she defines as “taking that ‘Justified’ world and putting it inside Detroit, and seeing those worlds collide. (Givens) certainly is a fish out of water there, and I love how Carolyn is very confrontational with him. She says, ‘I know how A familiar path: ‘Justified’ returns to FX with ‘City Primeval’ sequel “Somebody Up There Likes Me” (1956): New- man made a big leap into stardom in the story of boxer Rocky Graziano “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” (1958): Newman makes a first-rate Brick to Elizabeth Taylor’s Maggie in the Ten- nessee Williams play. “The Hustler” (1961): One of Newman’s most memorable roles is “Fast” Eddie Felson, a pool-playing upstart who wants to take on the legendary Minnesota Fats (Jackie Gleason). The film will be presented Tuesday, July 18, on Turner Classic Movies. “Cool Hand Luke” (1967): An outstanding Newman plays an independent-minded convict who shows “a failure to commu- nicate.” “The Sting” (1973): The reunited Newman and Robert Red- ford are great in this best picture Oscar winner as Depression-era con men out to even a score with a tough gangster (Robert Shaw). “The Verdict” (1982): In what many deem his career-best performance, Newman plays a down-on-his-luck Boston lawyer seeking redemption via a case against the Catholic Church. best of ... You have to find it where you can find it, and I think that’s what makes her and Raylan kindred spirits. She does things that are nec- essary, but she still has to find her footing and be true to herself.” cover story BY JAY BOBBIN Vivian and Timothy Olyphant in “Justified: City Primeval” July 16 - 22, 2023 The Galveston County Daily News 3 Barbie is taking over the big screen – and the world at large – as Greta Gerwig’s star-stud- ded film “Barbie” hits theaters Friday, July 21. To celebrate her live-action debut, the best of design are bringing Bar- bie’s iconic Dream- house to life in the “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge,” premier- ing Sunday, July 16, on HGTV. According to a news release from HGTV: “Each episode will feature captivating and nostalgic Barbie content as each team implements daring designs synonymous with the iconic Dreamhouse throughout the home.” Once completed, the rooms will be judged by designer (and Bar- bie collaborator) Jonathan Adler and Barbie Dream- house expert Tiffa- ny Brooks (“HGTV Design Star”), who will be joined each week by a different celebrity guest … some of whom may even star in the “Barbie” movie. During the “larger-than-life,” 90-min- ute premiere, supermodel and entre- preneur Ashley Graham, who hosts the series, takes the competitors on a trip to the Mattel headquarters for some design inspiration, receiving a gasp-worthy Barbie surprise along the way. lifestyle Build it, Barbie: HGTV’s best recreate Barbie’s Dreamhouse in new series BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT The cast of “Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge” The hit installment of the Real Housewives franchise, “RHONYC” returns after a two-year hiatus and a serious face-lift, as an all-new cast of housewives are set to be introduced. The Season 14 premiere of “The Real Housewives of New York City,” airs Sunday, July 16, on Bravo. While not much is known about the six new wives or the dynamic they share, Bravo shared some brief descriptions of what we can expect from these luxurious and industrious New York- ers. Sai De Silva, 42, is a proud Afro-Latina wom- an born and raised in the city. She works as the creative director of Scout the City, which was first a passion project for De Silva, later evolving into a bustling online hub for lifestyle tips and updates from her life as a Brooklyn-based mother of two. She is joined by Ubah Hassan, 35, a Somalian model and philanthropist who moved to New York City and made it home after being spotted and signed by a modeling agency while living in Canada. Hassan is now the founder and owner of her own hot sauce company: UBAHHOT. A New Yorker since birth, Erin Dana Lichy, 35, was raised in a close-knit Israeli family. De- termined even at a young age, Lichy became a real estate agent at 19 and now owns her own home renovation and design firm: Homegirl. The business savvy of these housewives continues with newcomer Jenna Loyns, 55, once the president and executive creative director of the J. (Live) July 16 - 22, 2023 The Galveston County Daily News 5 Jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the much-anticipated FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off Thursday, July 20, providing a platform for the world’s best soccer players to showcase their skills. This year’s international tournament has arguably the most talented pool of players, with several teams poised to make a strong run, though all eyes will be on the reigning and two-time defending champion: the United States. Heading into this tournament, the U.S. is looking to se- cure its fifth World Cup title and make history by becoming the first women’s football team to win a record third consec- utive FIFA Women’s World Cup. The squad has no shortage of experience — in fact, this will be the fourth World Cup tournament for forward Alex Morgan. A two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion, the San Diego Wave FC star played a big role in helping the U.S. secure a spot in this year’s World Cup. In the title match of the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship (for- merly the CONCACAF Women’s Championship), Morgan scored on a penalty kick to defeat Canada 1-0, earning the team a berth in both the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics. Having already played on two of the most talented teams, in 2015 and 2019, Morgan sees many similar championship qualities on this year’s team. “I think this is the best team we’ve ever had,” Morgan told The Guardian in an interview. “I feel like we have the talent, we have the quality, we have the right coach, the right play- ers, the right camaraderie, the right mentality.” Going into the tournament with confidence at an all-time high, the U.S. will start its quest for another World Cup championship on Friday, July 21, with a Group E match against Vietnam, airing live (from Auckland, New Zealand) on Fox. Fry (Billy West), a New York City pizza delivery boy who accidentally freezes himself in 1999 and gets defrosted in the year 3000. He befriends robot Bender (John DiMaggio) and cyclops Leela (Katey Sagal). Together with accountant Hermes Conrad (Phil LaMarr), assistant Amy Wong (Lauren Tom) and alien lobster Dr. John Zoidberg (West), they embark on adventures across the universe. “Good Omens: Season 2” (Prime Video — Season Premiere, July 28) Season 2 of this fantasy comedy series, based on the 1990 novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, explores storylines that go beyond the original source material to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley (David Tennant). Having been on Earth since The Beginning, and with the Apocalypse thwart- ed, Aziraphale and Crowley are getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery. 409-995-0088 ® 1740 FM 519 (Main Street) La Marque Mon - Fri • 8am - 5:30pm Repair • Maintenance • Inspections YOUR TRUSTED FLEET AUTO REPAIR & SERVICE OFFICIAL STATE INSPECTION STATION Don't take any chances when it comes to your dreams for retirement.
