There’s a consistency that comes from that, and with the rivalry as it is between Kimmel, CBS’s Colbert and NBC’s Jimmy Fallon — friends though they are off-camera — that’s very important to maintaining audience loyalty in an age where there’s already sufficient viewership fragmentation. Late-night viewers were accustomed to seeing repeats for much of 2023, given the Hollywood strikes that prevented production of new episodes for some time. It’s always preferable to have something fresh to present, but in a situation such as Colbert and the surgery he need- ed for his appendix (which came after another bout with COVID-19 for him), life sometimes overrides the best intentions professionally. This interest may be reflected in the hob- bies of Civil War re-enactors, one’s choice of literature or, as it turns out, one’s choice of televised entertainment. Luckily for the World War II enthusiasts out there, Ap- ple TV+ releases a new series Friday, Jan. 26. Based on au- thor and historian Donald L. Miller’s book, “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany,” the series, titled simply “Masters of the Air,” follows the 100th Bomb Group, an American airborne unit that helped de- feat the Nazis during World War II. Nine action-packed episodes are to be released weekly until the March 15 fi- nale, with the first two drop- ping on the streamer Jan. 26. Billed as — as British GQ writer Jack King wrote in his Nov. 9 article — the “spiritual sequel to ‘Band of Brothers,’” “Masters of the Air” is made possible by the HBO series’ producers Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, all of whom also collaborated behind the scenes on the 2010 miniseries “The Pacific.” While not a direct sequel to either HBO miniseries, “Masters of the Air” promises to take viewers away from a literal boots-on- the-ground look at the war machine and instead takes to the equally treacherous skies. There are plenty of recog- nizable faces for viewers to watch in awe, including “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022) actor Barry Keoghan, who also starred in the popular 2017 war epic “Dunkirk”; “War and Peace” star Callum Turner; and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll himself, Austin Butler (“Elvis,” 2022). Also starring in all nine episodes of the series are Ben Radcliffe (“Anatomy of a Scandal”), Anthony Boyle (“Tetris,” 2023), Rafferty Law (“Repo Men,” 2010), Da- vid Shields (“The Crown”), Darragh Cowley (“The Essex Serpent”), Edward Ashley (“The Terror”), Elliot Warren (“The Batman,” 2022) and Nate Mann (“Licorice Pizza,” 2021). BBC’s newest Time Lord, “Doctor Who’s” Ncuti Gatwa, and Sawyer Spielberg (“Honeydew,” 2020) also ap- pear in the series. Adapted from Miller’s novel by “Band of Brothers” and “The Last Vermeer” (2019) screenwriter John Orloff, “Master of the Air” flies viewers back in time to Europe during the Second World War, a time when the 8th Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group become known by its nickname, “The Bloody Hundredth.” And like most war films and series, the ex- Airborne TV event: New series honors 8th Air Force, WWII fighters “Splash” (1984): Hanks made a big splash himself in the comedy that made him a movie star, casting him as an ordinary guy in love with a mermaid (Daryl Hannah). “Big” (1988): The child- like spirit Hanks exudes is crucial to this comedy about a youngster who gets his wish to grow up overnight. “Philadelphia” (1993): Oscar came calling the first time for Hanks for his fully felt portrayal of a lawyer with AIDS suing his former firm. Turner Classic Movies shows the drama Wednesday, Jan. 24. “Forrest Gump” (1994): Hanks earned his second Oscar - in as many years - as he took the iconic title character through encounters with others real and fictional. “Saving Private Ryan” (1998): Under Oscar winner Steven Spielberg’s direction, Hanks is the perfect everyman in representing a U.S. soldier in charge of others amid the horrors of World War II. “Cast Away” (2000): Considering his sole co-star for much of the film is a volleyball, Hanks’ talent is invaluable to this saga of a courier-company executive stranded on an island by a plane crash. “Toy Story 3” (2010): He may have been a star of it in voice only, as toy cowboy Woody, but Hanks was part of what is sure to remain considered one of the most affecting animated films ever ... all the more remarkable for a franchise on its third round. best of ... BY JAY BOBBIN BEST TOM HANKS MOVIES Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah in “Splash” citement and patriotism are featured alongside a healthy dose of grounded reflection and plenty of unthinkable devastation. Per the official Apple TV+ description, the series takes a pilot’s-seat approach to the carnage as the men “conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer ter- ror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air.” While set largely in and over “the bucolic fields and villages of southeast England,” the nine-episode event is, in fact, based on a true story and visits “the harsh deprivations of a German prisoner of war camp” (per Apple). Such sensitive material requires an expert approach, and so Hanks, Spielberg and Goetzman are the perfect team to do the 100th’s sto- ry justice. With plenty of history in this genre and an undying respect for the perils of war, the trio reproduces “a unique and crucial time in world history” by way of “a genuine cinematic achieve- ment.” cover story BY DANA SIMPSON Ncuti Gatwa in “Masters of the Air” January 21 - 27, 2024 The Galveston County Daily News 3 lifestyle Worlds collide when this brand-new, rela- tionship-centered reality series takes flight. Save the date, as “Love & Translation” premieres Sunday, Jan. 21, on TLC. The latest relationship-focused reality series for the network follows three young American bachelors as they travel to a tropical locale, where they will expand their dating pool by meeting women from countries around the globe — women who come from different backgrounds and cultures, drastically different from what these globetrotting singles are used to. Warner Bros., TLC’s parent company, describes the series as follows: “American bachelors travel to paradise where they will be joined by 12 women from nine different countries who don’t speak any English. Without a shared language or the use of a translator, this series explores how singles looking for love come together in the attempt to find a connection. In spending time together and focusing on getting to know one another, ‘Love & Translation’ will showcase raw, genuine moments in a unique dating environment. “With challenges that include utilizing the five senses,” Warner Bros. continues, “such as uninterrupted eye-gazing and pheromone attraction tests, as well as adrenaline-pumping group date activities, these singles will try to learn about each other without the gift of lan- guage. And if the singles aren’t feeling that lov- ing feeling with anyone, they can pack up their bags and look for love elsewhere.” During this first season, the American singles taking on this international dating challenge are Kahlil, 24, from Texas; Tripp, 30, from California; and Dylan, 21, from Florida. The trio of daters will meet singles from coun- tries ranging from Brazil to South Korea, with potential partners ranging over a decade in age, from 20 to 32 years old: Jhenyfer, 24 (Brazil); Tulay, 25 (Germany); Sara, 20 (Italy); Imane, 21 (Morocco); Airi, 20 (Japan); Leidi, 28 (Co- lombia); Yam, 29 (Mexico); Gisele, 29 (Brazil); Joceline, 28 (France); Assia, 21 (France); Jin, 32 (South Korea); and Jhuliana, 23 (Bolivia). As the series travels from the African savan- na to your own backyard, National Geographic promises that each episode will immerse view- ers within a microcosm, where “tiny yet extraordinary creatures rely on their mighty abilities to make it through the day.” From there, episodes swing from the rainforests of Latin America, where newly hatched orchid bees and leafcutter ants take on their massive green surroundings, to a busy British farm, where a queen bumble- bee reigns over his hive, and ladybugs (or ladybirds, as the English call them) keep the garden in check — even check- ing in with the dung beetles and acacia ants of the African savanna, rounding the globe on a unique and educational adventure. “[Taking] viewers on an unforgettable jour- ney that exposes us to how these microsized creatures keep our world turning while facing monstrous forces and threats,” the all-new series “A Real Bug’s Life” premieres Wednesday, Jan. 24, on Disney+. lifestyle Big on bugs: Disney docu-series delves into dung beetles, butterflies and bugways BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT A bold jumping spider featured in “A Real Bug’s Life” reality tv BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT Love language: New TLC dating show gets creative with communication in focus “Choir” (Disney+ — Jan. 31, Docuseries Premiere) This 6-part documentary series follows the Detroit Youth Choir as they prepare for the performance of a lifetime. Meeting the Cyclones at home, the game airs live on CBS from the James H. Hil- ton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa. Entering the 2023-24 season, the Kansas Jayhawks are one of the favorites entering the year as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA. Beginning this year on a five-game win streak, their success this season has been ex- ceptional (9-1 as of Dec. 15), and with the major acquisition of a fourth-year transfer from Michigan State, Hunter Dickinson, a projected second-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, the Jayhawks are looking to win it all. Coming off his previous three seasons with Michigan, Dickinson is a presence at center, having averaged 18.5 points per game, 9.0 rebounds per game and 1.8 blocks per game last season. With the Jayhawks kicking off the season on fire, Dickinson hasn’t skipped a beat, improving in just about every area of his game, averaging 19.4 points per game while shooting for 63.7% from field goal range. On the defensive side, he’s been a handful for teams in the paint, averaging 12.6 rebounds per game and an improved average of 2.4 blocks per game, proving to his team and himself he made the right off-season move. Having shown right out the gates to be a star player for the Jayhawks and solidifying his position in collegiate basketball, his dominance at the center position is exactly what the Jayhawks need as they continue their chase for another Big 12 championship and national championship.
