With that said, Cooper – who directed the film in addition to starring in it as music icon Leonard Bernstein – previously worked in TV last in CBS’ series version of his movie “Limitless,” reprising his role as Eddie Morra on a recurring basis since his film career was so busy then. Cooper had plenty of time for TV work at the start of his career, earning a very early credit in a “Sex and the City” episode, then starring with Jennie Garth in a 2003 movie called “The Last Cowboy” that still repeats often on Hallmark Drama. He then made such shows as “The Street,” “Touching Evil” and “Jack & Bobby” and did guest shots on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Trial by Jury” before landing a series role that gave him a particular boost toward fame: Will Tippin, who didn’t know that his close friend Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner) was a covert spy, on “Alias.” After that, “Kitchen Confidential” and an arc on “Nip/Tuck” coin- cided with Cooper’s film career gaining traction, and he has stayed primarily with movie work since. However, he did return to TV to play his “Wet Hot American Summer” movie role again in the limited series “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.” Carey Mulligan and Bradley Cooper star in “Maestro” Send questions of general interest via email to tvpipeline@gmail.com. Cantu Attorney at Law 713-449-0760 305 21st Street #228, Galveston TX 77550 www.pcantulaw.com 2 The Galveston County Daily News January 28 - February 3, 2024 There’s no need to relive the same old entertainment this Groundhog Day, be- cause Prime has a brand new offering (without any time loops involved). “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” an action comedy series based on the plot of the original 1941 film, brings a new twist to the classic tale of espionage and high-stakes hi- jinks. All eight episodes of the series’ debut season release Fri- day, Feb. 2, on Prime Video. While the titular, married Smiths are likely to conjure the image of former real-life couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, both of whom starred in the 2005 film of the same name, the “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” concept is, in fact, a much older production, one directed by famed filmmak- er and so-called “Master of Suspense,” Alfred Hitchcock. The director — then not yet known for his 1960 master- piece “Psycho” nor his other many memorable films, which include “The Birds” (1963), “Rear Window” (1954) and “Vertigo” (1958) — became very well known for his grip- ping thriller style, but he also had a penchant for comedy, as was evident in several of his films, such as 1938’s “The Lady Vanishes” and, yes, the 1941 spy comedy “Mr. & Mr. Smith,” led by Carole Lom- bard (“My Man Godfrey,” 1936) and Robert Mont- gomery (“Lady in the Lake,” 1946). Since Hitchcock’s premiere of the now-classic tale, several other takes on the cat-and- mouse spy game have been born. This newest series iter- ation of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” stars the multi-talented rapper, writer, actor and producer Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) as a suave new spy who must assume the identity of “John Smith,” a standard, unassum- ing, run-of-the-mill husband to his wife, “Jane,” also a new hire by the same spy agency, played by three-time Emmy nominee Maya Erskine (“PEN15”). First announced in Febru- ary 2021, the eight-episode series was originally designed to include “Fleabag’s” Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the titular missus. But, due to some conflicts on the creative side, Waller-Bridge stepped away from the series, and Prime’s new series was born with Er- skine as co-pilot. Glover, meanwhile, who signed an exclusive deal with Amazon in 2021, takes his usual stance with respect to the series and has become involved both on camera and behind it. In addition to star- ring as the mysterious John Smith, Glover also co-created the series with “Atlanta” and “Fargo” writer Francesca Sloane. Alongside Glover and Erskine, Paul Dano (“Little Miss Sunshine,” 2006), John Turturro (“Barton Fink,” 1991) and Michaela Coel (“I May Destroy You”) are listed among the show’s big names as well. Dontae Hawkins (“Wu-Tang: An American Saga”), Alex Huynh (“The Greatest Beer Run Ever,” 2022) and Tamara Torres (“Orange Is the New Black”) are also credited among the cast, while Ron Perlman (“Hellboy,” 2004), Alexander Skarsgard (“Succession”), Sha- ron Horgan (“Bad Sisters”), Úrsula Corberó (“Money Heist”), Eiza González (“Baby Driver,” 2017) and Sarah Paulson (“American Horror Story: Coven”) are all credited as guest stars or cameos. Approaching the story with heavy firearms and a light sense of humor, “Mr. &. Mrs. Smith” asks the question: “What’s riskier, espionage or marriage?” cover story Keeping up with the Smiths: Glover, Erskine front new series ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ BY DANA SIMPSON Maya Erskine in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” “Spartacus” (1960): Title star Kirk Douglas — who also produced the film — reunited with Kubrick by hiring him to direct this Roman-gladia- tor epic, on which Douglas famously also took a stand by giving blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo full credit for his work. The picture’s four Oscar wins included one for co-star Peter Ustinov. “Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” (1964): One of the most legendary of all movie satires, this dark comedy puts the fate of the world in the hands of some ques- tionable leaders ... with nuclear war an imminent threat. Peter Sellers plays multiple roles, but one of the film’s most unforgettable images belongs to veteran character actor Slim Pickens. “2001: A Space Odyssey” (1968): A movie so singular and famous that Kubrick’s name immediately comes to mind when it’s mentioned, this sci-fi milestone examines the battle of wills between two astronauts (Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood) and the computer that runs the spaceship they’re aboard. The juxtaposition of futuristic sights and classical music is ingenious. Turner Classic Movies shows the picture Thursday, Feb. 1, as part of its series “The Power of Film.” “The Shining” (1980): Kubrick brought the Stephen King best seller to the screen, with a eerie Jack Nicholson as the new caretaker of a snowed-in inn where he terrorizes his wife (Shelley Duvall) while their young son (Danny Lloyd) displays clairvoyant tendencies. best of ... As citizens migrate from city centers to sub- urbia and from suburbia to rural life, love has taken root, driving down the dusty backroads of the American countryside in search of the perfect match. Hosted by superstar entertainer and Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles (“Har- riet,” 2019), this series follows four farmers as they harvest a little happiness and search for a ranch-ready partner. Based on a British format developed by the minds behind “American Idol,” Fremantle, and on a U.S.-based adaptation of the series that previously aired on The CW, in 2008, “Farmer Wants a Wife” joins these country-loving sin- gles as they are presented with women from the big city. With a fresh crop of singles to boot, this season’s “country boys” range in age from 23 to 42, hailing from four different states: Mitchell Kolinsky, 27, a first-generation farmer who purchased land to pursue his dreams in Mount Juliet, Tennessee; Brandon Rogers, 29, a sec- ond-generation potato and barley farmer, and the most remote single this season, living in Center, Colorado; Ty Ferrell, 42, a single father and cattle roper from Sikeston, Missouri; and Nathan Smothers, 23, a fourth-generation cit- rus and cattle farmer living in Bartow, Florida. Like with the series’ first season, the men will each take five women back home to their rural abodes, where the ladies will get a run- down on the realities of farm life alongside a crash course in country romance. Last season saw ups and downs for the farm- ers, with some finding love and others leaving just as single as they showed up. Hunter (31) and Meghan (23), for one, found their happily ever after, with the couple generating sparks from Day 1, resulting in a long-lasting rela- tionship. With more eager singles ready to date, and a whole lot of country to explore, an all-new season of “Farmer Wants a Wife” premieres Thursday, Feb. 1, on Fox. Sing your heart out: from Disney and Blumhouse, the all-new musical docuseries, “Choir,” premieres Wednes- day, Jan. 31, on Disney+. Directed by Emmy-win- ning filmmaker Rudy Valdez (“The Sentence,” 2018), this six-part series follows the pint-sized singers of the Detroit Youth Choir as they prepare for a performance of a lifetime, led by choir director Anthony White. Featuring a talented group of kids, ranging from 8 to 18 years of age, “Choir” follows along as these serious singers take on the challenges of being dedicated to their craft. Called a “feel-good, hopeful program” by Blumhouse Television president Chris McCumber, “Choir” comes as part of Disney’s ongoing mission to diversify its offerings, honoring the multicultural reach of its platform. Executive vice president for Disney’s Creative Development and Strategy, Ayo Davis, explains: “We are proud to team with Anthony White and the young voices of the De- troit Youth Choir to present this true-to-life story that is sure to inspire audiences of all ages. We guarantee you’ll be singing along with this joyful group as they learn lessons about music and life in general.” From executive producers Sara Bernstein (“The Super Models”), Jason Blum (“Get Out,” 2017), Ross M. Starring Larry David as an over-the-top version of himself, the series offers a tongue-in-cheek depiction of the writer/producer/ comedian’s fictionalized life. To keep the narrative spontaneous, the series is shot without a script and cast members are given scene outlines and improvise lines as they go.
