February 18 - 24, 2024 Paula Newsome and Ariana Guerra star in season 3 of “CSI: Vegas” Prime suspect celebrity pipeline BY JAY BOBBIN Tracing an award winner’s Field of TV dreams Q: I recently saw the movie “The Way West” on cable, and the opening credits said, “Introducing Sally Field.” Hadn’t she done a TV series before that? – Victor Smith, Orlando, Fla. A: The then-future Oscar and Prime- time Emmy winner had the title role in ABC’s series version of “Gidget” during the 1965-66 season, and she had a recurring part in the NBC sitcom “Hey, Landlord” early in 1967. “The Way West,” released in the spring of 1967, was Field’s first major movie credit (after an uncredited appearance in the 1962 Disney feature “Moon Pilot”). In fact, 1967 was quite an active year for Field. That fall, she began her three-season run in ABC’s “The Flying Nun,” and she then stayed largely with TV work by upping her drama cred with parts on other series and in TV-movies. However, she also did another sitcom, NBC’s “The Girl With Something Extra” (1973-74). As it happens, that show and “Gidget” are included in a weekend-long Catchy Comedy mara- thon of Field’s television efforts that continues Sunday, Feb. 18. Feature-film employment increased for Field after “Stay Hungry” (1976) and the enormously successful “Smokey and the Bandit” (1977), and she stayed principally in that venue until she returned to TV in a recurring role in NBC’s “ER” and a starring part in ABC’s “Brothers & Sisters.” Sally Field in “Gidget” Send questions of general interest via email to tvpipeline@gmail.com. That’s what lead investigator Josh Folsom (Matt Lauria, “Kingdom”) is hoping for in the season premiere of “CSI: Vegas,” airing Sunday, Feb. 18, on CBS. After Folsom’s mother’s killer was found dead in last season’s finale episode, the investigator was dragged away, suspected to be responsible for the death. The whodunnit cliffhanger has kept audiences on their toes for months in the ex- tended break between seasons of “CSI: Vegas,” affected by the strikes last year. It doesn’t seem like the killer’s identity and Folsom’s fate will be a mystery for very long, per the premiere episode description from CBS, as the new season opens with “the CSI team [combing] through every crumb of forensic evidence to determine his innocence or guilt.” Paula Newsome (“Barry”) leads the team as Maxine Roby, head of the crime lab, supported by Mandeep Dhillon (“Avoidance”) as in- vestigator Allie Rajan, Ariana Guerra (“Promised Land”) as Det. Serena Chavez, Jay Lee (“Looking for Alaska”) as investigator Chris Park, Lex Medlin (“Drop Dead Diva”) as investigator Beau Finado, Sara Amini (“Lucky Hank”) as chief medical examiner Sonya Nikolayevich, Sarah Gilman (“Those Who Can’t”) as rookie investigator Penny Gill, and reprising her role as investigator Catherine Wil- lows from the hit establishing series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” Marg Helgen- berger (“All Rise”), the only original series cast member to appear in more than one sea- son of the “Vegas” reboot. Ahead of her first appear- ance last season, Helgenberger spoke with Entertainment Weekly about her return to the franchise, praising the new cast. “They couldn’t have been more welcoming, But it was interesting because I had played Catherine Willows for so many years, It’s like a part of me,” said Helgenberger. “In terms of establishing a ca- maraderie or an instant chem- istry, it was pretty natural, I have to say, and I think it’s because I played this character for so long.” Meanwhile, Folsom’s fate is in the hands of the CSI team, but it’s not just work for some members of the lab. Det. Chavez herself may just be a little too close to Folsom to help build a case for his inno- cence — the pair have estab- lished a romantic relationship when they are off the clock. Complicating matters more, Allie, in addition to being a senior investigator in the lab, is Folsom’s ex. Bolstering a former boyfriend’s innocence is all in a day’s work. It’s no secret that salacious, outlandish cases are part of the DNA of any “CSI” series, and “Vegas” is no exception. The procedural has a habit of using comedy to create some levity over gory crime scenes and graphic medical examina- tions. Suspicious deaths at a clown hotel, a secret sex dun- geon and a masquerade party are just a few examples of the cases that have ended up in the lab over the course of the show’s first two seasons, not to mention more than one elaborate frame up. Nothing less could be expected from the crimes of Las Vegas. “CSI: Vegas” moves from Thursday nights to a coveted Sunday prime time spot on CBS, alongside action drama “The Equalizer,” returning for its fourth season, and the brand new series “Tracker,” starring Justin Hartley (“This Is Us”). The second season of “CSI: Vegas” upped the episode order from its first season’s 10 episodes to a whopping 21 episodes, how- ever this season is back to a tight 10. cover story Back to the lab: ‘CSI: Vegas’ returns to prove one of their own’s innocence BY SARAH PASSINGHAM Sarah Gilman in season 3 of “CSI: Vegas” “The Wizard of Oz” (1939): Well, of course. Generations continue to regale in the adventures of Dorothy Gale, Garland’s character who is whisked from a Kansas farm — along with Toto, of course — into a magical land where she makes fast friends with the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion (Jack Haley, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr). “The Harvey Girls” (1946): Musical highlights including “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe” help fuel this great Garland musical about several train passengers headed West to open a restaurant. The film is part of a day of Oscar nominees for best original score, Tuesday, Feb. 20, on Turner Classic Movies. “Easter Parade” (1948): You surely know on which holiday this picture always makes a television appearance. Irving Berlin’s score fu- els this saga with Garland, Fred Astaire and Ann Miller as performers whose career choices largely are dictated by their romantic ties, past and present. “A Star Is Born” (1954): Garland is the main factor setting this version of the much-told tale apart as she plays Esther Blodgett, whose showbiz career rises — under the stage name Vicki Lester — as that of the man she loves, Norman Maine (James Mason), sinks. Standout musical performances by Garland include “The Man That Got Away” and “Born in a Trunk.” best of ... Voting for each category opens annually for the public to share their preferences in each jurisdiction, having closed this year in late January. While winners won’t be announced until the curtains have been raised and Liu is on stage, some nominations for this year include the following: For Movie of the Year: “Barbie,” “Fast X,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Op- penheimer,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spi- der-Verse,” “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Film,” “The Little Mermaid” and “The Super Mario Bros. Big problems arise on Roloff Farm during an all-new season of “Little People, Big World,” premiering Tuesday, Feb. 20, on TLC. Having followed the Roloff family since 2006, this documen- tary-meets-reality series is now revving up for its 25th season, this time switching gears as it turns away from focusing on parents Matt and Amy Roloff (who divorced in May 2016), instead focusing on the couple’s adult son, Zach, 33, his wife Tori, 32, and their three children: Jackson, Josiah and Lilah. In a news release for the upcoming season, TLC shared: “Just as the Roloffs settle into a rhythm, family surprises and continued tension give rise to new struggles and questions. After an unexpected proposal, Matt and Caryn excit- edly look to the future while building their dream home on the farm, but the constant strain on the family makes them wonder what that future will look like.” Fans suspect that the drama won’t stop there, however, as Zach and his father, Matt, have been locked in an ongoing disagreement over the future of Roloff Farm. Back in 2022, the Roloff patriarch announced pub- licly that part of the farm would be put for sale (for a whopping $4 million), but later retracted his statement and shared that the same section of farmland would instead be developed and later used for an Airbnb property, where “LPBW” fans can come experience a pumpkin season of their own. While an exciting idea for some, People mag- azine has previously reported that Zach Roloff had expressed a vested interest in buying said section of the farm with his wife and discussed his plans to continue the Roloff legacy with his father long before the property ever went on the market. With tensions high and the future in flux, Sea- son 25 of “Little People, Big World” premieres Tuesday, Feb. 20, on TLC. lifestyle Roloff redux: ‘Little People, Big World’ returns, Roloff Farm in flux BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT Tori and Zach Roloff with their children in “Little People, Big World” reality tv BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT The People’s picks: People’s Choice Awards returns with new categories in focus “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” - Season 1 (AMC/AMC+ — Feb. 25, Series Premiere) Adding the the ever-expanding TWD universe, this new horror drama spinoff series follows the love story between Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira), changed by a world that is constantly shifting. (Live) The 2024 NASCAR Cup series is set to get under- way this weekend as the 66th annual Daytona 500 kicks off at Daytona International Speedway in Day- tona Beach, Florida, Sunday, Feb.18, with the Great American Race broadcast live on Fox. With a new season comes new opportunities to win, and this year fans can expect exactly that with established names such as Chase Elliot, Danny Ham- lin and Ryan Blaney all expected to remain a force on the track. However, when it comes to winning it all, 31-year-old Kyle Larson is in a field of his own as he looks to continue adding more championships to his resume. The Elk Grove, California, native is no stranger to success. Larson put in a dominant performance in 2021, earning himself a 10-win season before going on to win the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Championship. And it seems like Larson just keeps improving on the track each year. During the 2023 season, Larson led a Cup series-best 1,127 laps, earning his second Championship 4 appearance in three years while fin- ishing second in overall standings. While Larson has been finding success on the track, he maintains a level-headed approach, aiming to improve on his mistakes and maintain consistency. “You want to win races and contend for wins and championships and all that,” Larson said, speaking to Hendrick Motorsports. “For me, I want to clean up all the areas where I kind of struggled in ‘23 and throughout my Cup career. I pretty much lead the series in crashing, but I also lead the series in laps led. If we can maintain the good stuff with my style but rein it back a little bit, that would be my main goal. When you can finish more races, you are going to have more opportunities to win and you are going to win more. I think that all compounds.” The Great American Race returns!
