Q: I know that Paul Giamatti has been getting awards and rave reviews for the movie “The Holdovers.” Has he done any other television series besides “Billions”? – Karen Wade, via e-mail A: Though it was a limited series, HBO’s “John Adams” is very sig- nificant in the actor’s career, since the 2008 historical drama boosted his career substantially by earning him such awards as a Primetime Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild honor. By then, he had done guest shots on such shows as “NYPD Blue” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” and he had hosted a 2005 episode of “Saturday Night Live.” He also had made cable movies including “Winchell” and “The Pentagon Papers.” Later, Giamatti appeared in multiple episodes of “Inside Amy Schum- er” and “Lodge 49” (the latter of which he also was an executive producer of), and he reprised the role of John Adams in voice only in Ken Burns’ 2022 documentary “Benjamin Franklin.” He also was featured in the second season of “30 Coins,” seen in America on Max. Q: I saw the Denzel Wash- ington movie “Flight” on cable recently, and I recog- nized the actress who played the chief stewardess from a TV series, but I can’t remem- ber which one. Can you help ? – Kara Johnson, Columbus. Ohio A: While Tamara Tunie may be remembered by daytime viewers as Jessica Griffin on the long-defunct “As the World Turns,” she’s arguably best-known as medical examiner Melinda Warner on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” She recently resurfaced in that role on another entry in the NBC franchise, “Law & Order: Organized Crime.” Also a stage actress (and theater producer, a job she first filled on the acclaimed “Spring Awakening”), the New York-centric Tunie has done guest roles on such other series as “Better Call Saul,” “Blue Bloods,” “Billions,” “Elementary,” “Survivor’s Remorse,” “Chicago Fire” (on which she also played the Melinda Warner character), “The Good Wife,” “Days of Our Lives,” “24,” “Sex and the City,” “New York Undercover” and “NYPD Blue.” Q: Please settle a debate. Was there a remake of the Raymond Burr series “Ironside”? – Evan Myers, Stuart, Fla. A: There was, but it didn’t last long. NBC – the network on which the original version also ran – showed how different it wanted the 2013 update to be while still holding to the initial premise, by casting Blair Underwood in Burr’s earlier role as the police detective who used a wheelchair. The setting was changed from San Francisco to New York, and while Ironside still had other investigators working with him, they had different character names from the first show’s. (One of the roles was played by Kelsey Grammer’s daughter Spencer.) When we said the revised series didn’t last long, we meant it: It had only four airings before NBC pulled it, by which time the ratings were about half of what they had been for the premiere episode (which was directed by “thirtysomething” alum Peter Horton). Five additional episodes were filmed but not shown. Starring Irish actor and screenwriter Domhnall Gleeson (“Har- ry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” 2011) and English actress Andrea Rise- borough (“To Leslie,” 2022), the six-episode drama series premieres Sunday, March 17, on the network. While “Alice & Jack” pre- mieres to North American audiences midway through the month of March, it first premiered on England’s Channel 4 this past Valen- tine’s Day (Feb. 14) — a timely release due to the ongoing romantic theme of the series. The six-episode series, which was created by “Mad About You” and “Mad Men” producer Victor Levin, spans 15 years and “explores the seminal question of whether the bonds between us are stronger than the forces that would tear us apart” (per PBS). When Jack (Gleeson), a calm, reserved scientist, meets a young, tightly wound financier named Al- ice (Riseborough), the pair instantly hit it off despite their many differences in both lifestyle and personality. They spend just one night together before returning to their separate lives, but over the course of a decade and a half, Jack and Alice meet re- peatedly — often by chance — and begin to question what it is about the other person that keeps them both coming back. Described by Freman- tle, the show’s distribution company, as a “love story for the ages,” “Alice & Jack” is arguably a more realistic representation of romance in the modern world than the traditional meet-cute roman- tic comedy. With so many possibilities to interfere with love, trust and friendship these days, the nature of our relationships have changed drastically, and TV fans need look no further than these star-crossed lovers for confir- mation. Following the series’ Sep- tember 2023 premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, PBS Masterpiece executive Suzanne Simpson described “Alice & Jack” as “exceptionally beautiful and profound” and added that Masterpiece is “proud to add” it to their lineup. All this said, the heavy subject matter and at times brutal honesty do not weigh the series down, a feat that is largely due to moments of comic relief on the part of the supporting cast. Chief among these providers of lev- ity is Aisling Bea, who plays Jack’s later-in-life partner, Lynn. Bea, now best known for her work in the Irish comedy “This Way Up” and the low-key sci-fi dramedy “Living With Yourself,” is gaining popularity stateside for her quick wit and cheer- ful banter — a welcome addition to the uncertainty brought to the screen by Al- ice and Jack. March 17 - 23, 2024 The Galveston County Daily News 3 Created and directed by Academy Award and Emmy-winning filmmakers E.Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin — the minds behind the 2018 documentary, “Free Solo” — the docuseries, “Photographer,” premieres as part of the duo’s “first look” deal with National Geographic, airing its first episode Monday, March 18, on the network, before streaming on Disney+ and Hulu the following day. According to a description released by Disney, each hour-long episode in the series follows the life of a different iconic photog- rapher, journeying from the artist’s child- hood and early career to their present-day life and ongoing projects. “From the front lines of war to the cov- ers of fashion magazines and the depths of the oceans,” Disney explains, “audiences will be taken on a journey alongside these renowned photographers who have spent a lifetime in the endless pursuit of perfecting their craft to learn their incredible stories.” The news release also promises that, “through verité footage of their current mission interwoven with backstory, archival materials and interviews, viewers will gain a deeper understanding of each photogra- pher’s process, how they found themselves behind the camera, and discover how they see and experience the world.” First greenlit for a single pilot episode, the series first focused on National Geo- graphic’s 2018 Adventurers of the Year — couple Paul Nicklen and Cristina Mit- termeier — who are often quoted to be “passionate about exploration, the oceans and each other.” This pilot episode, which will now air as the series premiere, joins the pioneering duo as they begin an ambitious, four-year expedition aboard the SeaLegacy One, taking the vessel on its maiden voyage out to the sparkling waters surrounding the Bahamas. Documenting hidden wonders — above sea level and below, with stunning moments captured across the globe — the all-new series, “Photographer,” premieres Monday, March 18, on National Geographic, and streaming the next day on Hulu and Dis- ney+. Seven of the nine couples re- turning for Season 8 of “90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?” — premiering Sunday, March 17, on TLC — have been announced by the network, promising a dra- ma-filled ride. With plenty of relationship highs, lows and woes to come, Variety recently shared the logline for the returning “90 Day Fiancé” spinoff, generating excitement and a few side-eyes as TLC promises the couples will be “put to the test on everything from immigration issues, preg- nancies, potential breakups, and more,” and asks: “With these couples kissing the honeymoon stage goodbye, are they headed toward happily ever after or happily never after?” Along with this written teaser, the network also released the names of seven couples that will be highlighted throughout the new episodes, allowing viewers a quick taste of what’s to come for each. Emily Bieberly and Kobe Blaise, who met during Season 9 of “90 Days,” are said to be taking a pilgrimage to Kobe’s home country, Cameroon, where Emily will have to prove she can be a good Cameroonian wife. With two children in tow — and a third on the way — the couple will certainly have their hands full. Meanwhile, longtime fan-fa- vorite couple Loren and Alexei Brovarnik celebrate their child’s first birthday and decide they are finished having babies once and for all. The third couple announced — Thaís Ramone and Patrick Mendez — travel to Brazil, joined by the rowdy John McManus as they attempt to mend their strained relationship with Thaís’s father, who wasn’t aware his daughter was even planning to get married. The Australian Grand Prix kicks off Friday, March 22, and runs through Sunday, March 24, at the Melbourne Grand Prix Cir- cuit in Melbourne, Australia, with practices, qualifiers and race day all broadcast live on ESPN [US]/TSN [CA]. With a new season comes new challenges, and for the Visa Cash App RB Formula One team, formerly known as Red Bull Racing’s sister team, AlphaTauri, expectations are certainly higher. RB For- mula One made great steps forward in the off-season, including up- grades to the newly branded VCARB 01 front and rear suspension and a gearbox from Red Bull, with the hopes of making some signif- icant progress on the grid. Following the release of driver Nyck de Vries last summer, RB Formula One was able to provide 34-year-old Daniel Ricciardo the opportunity to make his return to F1, proving to be a solid choice with Ricciardo going on to earn the team’s best finish last year — a seventh at the Mexican Grand Prix. The team looks to make big strides this season and with Round 3 about to get underway, Ricciardo is keeping expectations realistic with the hopes of reaching the top five a few times this calendar year — if all goes to plan. “You have to aim high, but being in this sport for so long, you want to remain as realistic as possible as you don’t want to end up ultimately disappointed,” said Ricciardo, speaking to F1.com. “Top- five finishes should be the target, and if we get in that position, maybe some podiums present themselves. Of course, we want to win, but, you know ... I think we made steps last year, let’s make a few more steps.” “Do I think top-five results are on the table — and could they be on the table in the first half of the season?” Ricciardo continued. “I’d like to think so.” Formula One returns down under for the 2024 Australian Grand Prix Full name: Daniel Ricciardo Birthdate: July 1, 1989 (34) Birthplace: Perth, Australia Height/weight: 5-10/145 Team: Visa Cash App RB Formula One Team Honours and achievements: 8x Grand Prix Winner (2014 (3X), 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021) player profile BY ROBERTO JOZEF sports zone contd. continued on page 9 in focus www.Galvestonwbm.com STOCKING DEALER For Trex Decking 1x6 & 2x6 In Stock Stocking Dealer For Smart Products Siding, Trim, Soffit PREMIER DEALER For piling in stock 6x6, 8x8, 10x10, 12x12 409-995-0088 ® 1740 FM 519 (Main Street) La Marque Mon - Fri • 8am - 5:30pm Repair • Maintenance • Inspections YOUR TRUSTED FLEET AUTO REPAIR & SERVICE OFFICIAL STATE INSPECTION STATION 6 The Galveston County Daily News March 17 - 23, 2024 SUNDAY DAYTIME March 17, 2024 C-COMCAST OC-OFF CHANNEL 8 AM 8:30 9 AM 9:30 10 AM 10:3011 AM 11:3012 PM 12:301 PM 1:30 2 PM 2:30 3 PM 3:30 4 PM 4:30 5 PM 5:30 (2) (51) (4) (20) (5) (39) (6) (47) (7) (49) (8) (8) (9) (26) (10) (45) (11) (11) (12) (2) (13) (13) (14) (14) CABLE CHANNELS (21) (22) (23) (24) (25) (29) (31) (32) (33) (34) (35) (36) (37) (38) (40) (41) (42) (43) (44) (45) (46) (47) (48) (50) (51) (52) (54) (57) (58) (59) (63) (65) (66) (80) (101) (103) (105) (106) (111) (114) (117) (400) (410) (425) (444) (474) (488) March 17 - 23, 2024 The Galveston County Daily News 7 CALL THE MIDWIFE PBS 7 p.m. In this Season 13 premiere, the midwives begin a new training program to increase their ranks.
