Q: I know that Sam Waterston has left “Law & Or- der.” Is there any chance that he might come back for guest appearances as Jack McCoy? – Ken Betts, via e-mail A: As long as the actor is still available and willing, there’s always a chance. However, if that were to happen, we wouldn’t bet on it being soon, since he’s sure to be respectful of Tony Goldwyn having the time and space to settle in as his successor on the NBC drama. Waterston himself wanted that sort of leverage when he first joined the show in 1994, which he made clear at the time. He also wanted to be mindful of his “Law & Order” forerunner, Michael Moriarty, whose character Ben Stone preceded McCoy. After he was hired for the series, Waterston didn’t want to address his work there until had a chance to get situated on the program and into the mindset of McCoy. Always known as someone of personal and professional conviction, Waterston would be sure that all the circumstances were right before he re-entered the “Law & Order” universe … though executive producer Dick Wolf and the show’s other makers undoubtedly would love to have him back in any way, much as they did when the series made its return in 2022. Q: When will “Superman & Lois” be back? – Casey Smith, Galveston, Texas A: Its fourth and final CW season is being planned to air this fall. The network’s entertainment president, Brad Schwartz, recently said that it could have been ready for this summer upon the completion of the extensive special effects. However, he prefers to have it compete against other networks’ new offerings when those are ready to go when the traditional broadcast-television season starts. The show’s final round will consist of 10 episodes and a reduced cast of regulars, suggesting that certain characters may not survive until the end of the series. Elizabeth Tulloch, who plays the series’ Lois Lane, has indicated that there are “very, very high stakes” in the upcoming chapters that may indeed see some co-stars exit the adventure-drama in advance of the last fadeout. Q: Including his most recent appearance in January. How many times has Justin Timberlake been on “Sat- urday Night Live”? – Christie Howard, via e-mail A: He has hosted the iconic NBC show five times and has been a musical guest seven times — including that latest stint in January and the first time he was on the program as a member of NSYNC. He also popped up in one episode in a surprise-guest capacity. Timberlake’s January return to “SNL” marked the first time he had been on the show in more than a decade, the previous time having been in December 2013. An interesting aspect of his latest round in it was that the host of that episode was Dakota Johnson, with whom Timberlake shared his first scene in the 2010 movie “The Social Network.” March 24 - 30, 2024 Louisa Harland stars in “Renegade Nell” A strange destiny TUNED IN WEEKLY celebrity pipeline BY JAY BOBBIN Is another return in ‘Order’ for Sam Waterston? All eight episodes of the fam- ily-friendly fantasy series drop on the streamer on pre- miere day. Nell Jackson, portrayed by “Derry Girls” star Louisa Harland, is a clever, brave woman who makes a name for herself as a highwaywom- an in 18th-century England after she is framed for mur- der. Petty theft on the road keeps Nell afloat until she discovers she is destined for something beyond her wild- est imagination. When pow- ers enchant Nell, they make her even more of a force than she was on her own. A magical spirit appears to Nell in the form of Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed, “Ted Lasso”) to help her on her adventures — a sort of Tinker Bell-type fairy side- kick. Nell’s abilities to evade capture and survive on her own get her into as much trouble as they keep her out of. With seemingly everyone after her for one reason or another, Nell thrives as an outlaw possessed by magical powers that make her stron- ger, faster and more capable than she ever was before. Also starring in “Rene- gade Nell” are Frank Dillane (“Fear the Walking Dead”) as Nell’s difficult, fair-weath- er friend, Charles Devereux; Adrian Lester (“The Unde- clared War”) as the well-con- nected Earl of Poynton; Alice Kremelberg (“The Sin- ner”) as power-hungry Sofia Wilmot; and Joely Rich- ardson (“The Sandman”) as oddball newspaper magnate Lady Eularia Moggerhanger. Rounding out the cast are Pip Torrens (“The Crown”) as Lord Blancheford, Jake Dunn (“Big Boys”) as Thomas Blancheford, Enyi Okoronkwo (“The Lazarus Project”) as Rasselas and Craig Parkinson (“Line of Duty”) as Nell’s father, Sam. Newcomers Bo Bragason and Florence Keen star as Nell’s younger sisters, Roxy and George. Sofia, a widow motivated by a need for power and in- dependence, is the architect of a scheme to bring down Nell. Aiding Sofia in her plot is the Earl, an influen- tial political figure with the connections she needs to get the job done. Unfortunately for the pair of strategists, Nell more than lives up to the talk going around town. In an official trailer for the series, excited gossips speak of Nell, saying, “she’s unnatural,” and “she is formidable,” before Nell herself warns a foe, “you don’t want to mess with me.” Nell literally has the fighting spirit, as Sofia points out in the trailer, saying, “she fights as though she’s possessed.” Something comes over the titular renegade in these battles; whether it’s a firefight or hand-to-hand combat, a dark glow reaches her eyes and Nell cannot be bested. Nell is joined on her ad- venture by her two sisters, as well as Rasselas. Inspired by the chance to chase his own freedom, Rasselas leaves his life as a stable boy behind to help Nell, Roxy and George on their journeys. The troupe, with Billy Blind in tow, earns quite a reputation all across the country while on the run. As Lady Eularia claims in the series trailer, “if you haven’t heard of Nell Jackson, then you’re the only person in En- gland who hasn’t.” Known for crafting sat- isfyingly complex adult dramas such as “Last Tango in Halifax” and “Gentleman Jack,” “Renegade Nell” is a bit of a departure for series creator Sally Wainwright, who is also the BAFTA Award-winning series creator of small-town British crime drama “Happy Valley.” In an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show” this February, Lester shared that the new series “is really good fun. It’s very different for Sally Wain- wright. She’s put political intrigue, sprites, magic, lots of fighting, highway robbery and Regency England in a big pot, gave it a stir, and out came an amazing idea.” In further praise, Lester said, “It is really good writing and I have a really good time being bad.” cover story Just like magic: Original fantasy-adventure series ‘Renegade Nell’ premieres BY SARAH PASSINGHAM Enyi Okoronkwo and Louisa Harland as seen in “Renegade Nell” March 24 - 30, 2024 The Galveston County Daily News 3 Following a chaotic, nonstop year of hard work (both in their personal and profession- al lives), Jasmine and the crew return for another summer by the beach, as “Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard” returns for a second season, Sunday, March 24, on Bra- vo. “After introducing viewers to her group of business-minded friends, Jasmine Ellis Cooper and the ‘Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard’ housemates are back in Massa- chusetts for another summer of fun (which will be sprinkled in with a healthy dose of drama, of course),” Bravo reports. During this sophomore season, Jasmine will be joined by plenty of returning friends from last season — namely, Nicholas “Nick” Arrington, Jordan Emanuel, Bria Fleming, Shanice Henderson, Amir Lan- caster, Preston Mitchum, Summer Marie Thomas and Alex Tyree — but will also be welcoming the addition of newcomer No- elle Hughley. Noelle, an Atlanta resident and friend to many of the “Vineyard” girls, was quoted as saying she is “thrilled that her friend, Summer, invited her to vacation in Martha’s Vineyard,” and, according to Bravo, she is “single and ready to mingle,” catching the eye of the ever-flirty Alex … that is, along- side her close friend, Summer. With romances in the air and relation- ships in limbo, eagle-eyed fans might be wondering why host Jasmine’s husband — Silas Cooper, heavily featured in “Mar- tha’s Vineyard’s” first season — will not be appearing during this second summer. Fear not: Bravo has confirmed that Silas was unable to attend filming as he was serving in the Army overseas. The couple remain together and are reportedly expecting their first child together. That being said, there is still plenty of drama to be had. The network promises that, “After spending the fall and winter apart, the housemates are ready to get back in the summer mood on ‘SHMV’ Season 2, ... [banding] together to escape their wor- ries, discover the beauty of this exclusive en- clave, and have an epic summer, it becomes clear that some of their friendships are frac- tured while others are in full bloom.” Directed by Academy Award nominee Matt Ogens (“Home + Away,” 2018) and Kachi Benson (“Daugh- ters of Chibok,” 2019), the feature-length documentary “Madu” premieres Friday, March 29, on Disney+. Having debuted at the Santa Barbara Film Festival in Febru- ary of this year, chosen as the Santa Barbara International Film Festival Official Selection, “Madu” details one boy’s journey to follow his dreams, joining 12-year-old Anthony Madu as he travels from his hometown in Nigeria to a prestigious ballet school across the ocean, the 100-year-old Elmhurst Ballet School, in order to hone his talents among the best. The talented young ballerino was first discovered in 2020, following the release of a vid- eo shared by the boy’s ballet teacher — a 44-second clip of Anthony dancing, a brief but jaw-dropping performance that soon went viral, earning him a scholarship to study at the academy. Disney released a press statement describing the fol- lowing: “Having never left his home outside of Lagos, Antho- ny finds himself thrust into a new world where his wildest dreams are suddenly within reach. His courageous journey is a story of extraordinary obstacles as he searches for belonging and acceptance, a family far away, and unexpect- ed challenges that could impact his future. Forming a rich and immersive tapestry told on multiple continents, ‘Madu’ introduces the world to a boy chasing a dream of inspiration that will resonate with us all.” A touching and inspiring tale of determination and talent this once-in-a-lifetime story comes from producers Jamie Patricof (“Exhibiting Forgiveness,” 2024), Katie McNeill (“The Place Beyond the Pines,” 2012) and Rachel Halilej (“High, Hel- lo”) of Hunting Lane Films. lifestyle Breakthrough ballerino: 12-year-old Nigerian dancer stuns in new Disney documentary BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT Anthony Madu as seen in “Madu” reality tv BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT Amir Lancaster in “Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard” Scandals and sandals: ‘Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard’ returns for steamy sophomore season in focus “Parish” (AMC+ — March 31, Series Premiere) This six-episode, high-octane thriller stars Giancarlo Esposito as Gracian ‘Gray’ Parish, is a family man and proud owner of a luxury car service in New Orleans. (Live) The National Hockey League returns with more action in the East as the Toronto Maple Leafs head to Buffalo, New York, to take on the Buffalo Sabres in their final regular season matchup. The game airs Saturday, March 30, at the KeyBank Center, with the coverage broadcasting live on ESPN. This season has been less than ideal for the Sabres, with the team sitting in the bottom half of the Eastern Conference standings going into April and their 13- year playoff drought potentially growing another year older. Additionally, expectations going into this season were much higher for the team, having just signed fran - chise all-star defenseman Rasmus Dahlin to a massive eight-year, $88-million contract extension. While the Sabres sit outside of a playoff spot, the Swedish blueliner continues to prove his worth, as Dahlin finished ninth in goals amongst all defensemen — including a 73-point campaign in 78 games last sea- son — and ended up eighth in the James Norris Me- morial Trophy race. He also recorded the best defensive season of his career so far, with 45 takeaways, 102 hits and 132 blocked shots. The offensively talented Maple Leafs, meanwhile, could use some improvement on their own blue line. This season, the Maple Leafs are firing on all cylinders with Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Morgan Reilly leading the way offensively, with Matthews entering the month of March with 53 goals. However, while the Maple Leafs can score with ease, keeping the puck out of the net has been a struggle as they hold a 3.16 goals-against average, with injuries to Mark Giordano not helping the cause. As both teams are seemingly on opposite sides of the standings, look for the Sabres to come out swinging as Dahlin will surely be looking to shut down Matthews and the Maple Leafs’ offensive prowess.
