Why, then, did Sally Field do the tribute to Emma Stone on the show instead? – Casey Grimes, via e-mail A: In gathering past winners of the acting categories to present this year’s awards, the producers tried to play up connections between performers who had worked together, and Field played Aunt May in the two “Amazing Spider-Man” movies that featured Stone as Gwen Stacy. Thus, she could speak to Stone’s professional acumen on the set. As photos taken after the presentation showed, Stone had plenty of time to commiserate with Lawrence as the evening went on, with Stone firmly grasping her second Oscar for best actress. She won that for “Poor Things,” while her first one had been for 2016’s “La La Land” — which also starred Ryan Gosling, whose Oscar-show rendering of the “Barbie” tune “I’m Just Ken” was pegged by Stone as the likely reason she “broke” her dress by singing and dancing ener- getically before she took the stage. Q: Why did so many shows go into reruns so soon after their new seasons start- ed? – Barry Kahn, Colorado Springs, Colo. A: Actually, the great bulk of scripted broadcast-network series typically air repeats as spring nears, but it may have seemed more pronounced this time because of the late start the television season got. Last year’s entertainment-in- dustry strikes kept most shows from running new episodes until this past January, February or March, and with the impact on production, pre- senting some reruns gave the shows some leeway to catch up on their schedules for making stories for the remainder of the season. By the same token, networks like to have their shows stay as fresh as possible until the traditional television season ends in May, so mixing in some repeats allows for the season’s last new episode to be held until that general time frame. Because of the strike-related delay, series that normally would generate 22 episodes per season only have had an average of 10 or 12 this time, so that cutdown has largely dictated what the networks have needed to do. Q: Was “Gone With the Wind” the first film ever shown on Turner Classic Movies? – Stacy Ringer, Reading, Pa. A: It was, and it was no surprise, since the Oscar-winning 1939 epic is a favorite of then-TCM owner Ted Turner — who also used it as the inaugural attraction of his TNT channel several years earlier. TCM was unveiled to a not-yet-nationwide audience on April 14, 1994, with Robert Osborne as the host who introduced the service and went on to become a staple of many devotees’ viewing until his retirement in 2016 (He passed away the following year). Featuring artists from four different corners of the Unit- ed States — in California, the Appalachian region, Texas and Chicago — “The Express Way” looks at the ways these individuals use art to make connections within and outside of their commu- nities and how they use their artwork to challenge views and blaze a trail for others to follow in the future. Best known by most for his portrayal of Gus in eight seasons in the detective sitcom “Psych,” which he also re- prised for three spinoff films, Hill, a real TV veteran, has also had starring roles in “The West Wing,” “Ballers,” “Suits” and more recently, the ABC sitcom “The Wonder Years.” Now, turning his atten- tion to the artistic pursuits of others, PBS shared in a news release that Hill traveled across America “to connect with local visionaries, activists, changemakers and pioneers who are using their artistic passions to foster connection, deepen empathy and create meaningful change within their communities.” “There are many people in this world who create space out of nothing. They are the ones turning on the light, set- ting the path and then guid- ing others along the journey,” Hill shared about the series in the release. Shaheem Sanchez, known for his performance in the 2019 film “Sound of Metal,” is a deaf dancer based in Los Angeles. Hill meets with Sanchez in the first episode of “The Express Way,” connect- ing over a shared passion for dance before getting to know other artists across California. Also featured in the Cali- fornia stop of “The Express Way” is a group of senior cit- izens who call themselves the Grant Street Follies, a com- mitted activists and cabaret performers in San Francisco who use their art to combat anti-Asian hate and celebrate the city’s historic Chinatown. Finally, Hill meets trailblazing musicians in Los Angeles’s own Mariachi Arcoiris, the world’s first LGBTQ+ maria- chi group. Visiting the Appalachian region, Hill gets a thorough musical education. In Ken- tucky, he meets first with Doug Naselroad, the founder and director of Troublesome Creek Stringed Instrument Company. His program, The Culture of Recovery, teaches people to make stringed in- struments as an assistive out- let while they recover from opioid addiction. In Johnson City, Tennessee, Gram- my-nominated bluegrass mu- sician Amythyst Kiah (“Black Myself”) teaches Hill about the history of Black artists in traditional American music. The founder of “Latin-grass,” musician Joe Troop (“Red, White & Blues”), shares how he fused folk music with bluegrass instrumentation and continues to innovate with his latest collaboration with Venezuelan musician Larry Bellorin (“Caballo Viejo”). Next, Hill makes his way down to Texas to meet art- ists who are leaders within their local communities. Hill meets Abuela M’api Rain- flowa, founder of Houston Aztec Dance & Drum, who shows him the “Mexica” handshake, as well as the Aztec Sun Dance and a sweat lodge ceremony. At his next stop in Texas, David Lozano, executive director of Cara Mia Theatre, welcomes Hill to Dallas, sharing with him some of the theater’s produc- tions that focus on the Latino experience. In Denton, John Bramblitt, a man who lost his vision taught himself to paint again using touch. Bramblitt creates vibrant paintings and murals, leads workshops and helps foster artistic abilities in other people with vision im- pairment. In the final installment of “The Express Way,” Hill blows into the Windy City to meet artist activists. In Chicago’s South Side, Hill watches on as the Andre The- atre Collective casts its first play written by incarcerated playwrights. The production explores crime in the city and its impact on Black commu- nities. Elsewhere in the city, Vershawn Sanders Ward’s Red Clay Dance uses African Di- asporic dance to make a space for People of Color in her community to feel seen. Hill later meets musician Bassel Almadani, of Bassel & The Supernaturals (“Smoke”), who spreads awareness of the Syri- an civil war and refugee crisis with his platform. cover story Creative states: Tour America with homegrown artists in ‘The Express Way’ BY SARAH PASSINGHAM Dulé Hill in “The Express Way with Dulé Hill” April 21 - 27, 2024 The Galveston County Daily News 3 Hot, heavy and humid as ever, the fan-fa- vorite spinoff “90 Day Fiancé: Love in Par- adise” returns for its fourth season Monday, April 22, on TLC. Following as “hopeful romantic” Amer- icans test the waters and give international love a chance at sparking something long- term, this batch of episodes will see four all-new couples explore their relationships around the world, with U.S. citizens travel- ing to Italy, Malta, Brazil and Colombia. Ahead of the season’s premiere, TLC re- leased the names (and a brief description) of each couple that will be featured this time around, introducing viewers to a cast of eight that’s sure to lead to some explosive drama — and, for one man, potentially his 81st child. That’s right: 32-year-old Kyle, an L.A. na- tive and one of Season 4’s hopefuls, works as an accountant by day and a “donation dad” at night, with his excessive sperm donation resulting in 71 children, with another nine currently on the way. Kyle met Anika, 39, a single mother living in Malta, when she found Kyle’s donation information online and booked a consul- tation. After feeling a spark between them, however, their relationship progressed from “donating to dating,” as TLC describes, and cameras now follow Kyle as he travels to the gorgeous archipelago Anika resides on. Hop- ing to continue his relationship and poten- tially grow a family of his own, Anika won- ders “if Kyle is willing to stop spreading his seed and plant it only for her” (per TLC). Joining the duo are three additional cou- ples: Shawn, 61, a hairstylist who fell for the 25-year-old Brazilian beauty Alliya, a trans- gender woman; Alex, 30, who plans to live out all her romantic fantasies with 33-year- old Adriano, who lives in Italy; and finally, L.A. native Luke, a 30-year-old man moving to Colombia after one initial visit, where he met Madelein, 19, the so-called “love of his life.” It’s not all roses, chocolates and romance, however, as conflict strikes for all couples involved. Equal parts heartwarming and heartbreak- ing, Season 4 of “90 Day Fiancé: Love in Paradise” begins Monday, April 22, on TLC. Honoring our great blue planet — and marking 15 years since Disneynature’s inau- gural release, “Earth” (2007) — the all-new feature-length documentary “Tiger” premieres Monday, April 22, on Disney+. Narrated by Priyanka Chopra Jonas (“Baywatch,” 2017), this compelling story combines “fast-paced action with remarkably intimate mo- ments” (per Disney), as it lifts the veil on one of our planet’s most revered and misunder- stood animals — the tiger — and allows viewers to journey alongside a young tigress named Ambar and her three cubs, all living in the forests of India. “In the film, the cubs — curi- ous, rambunctious and at times a bit clumsy — have a lot to learn from their savvy mother, who will do all she can to keep them safe from pythons, bears and marauding male tigers,” Disney describes, highlighting a story of perseverance, surviv- al and a mother’s never-ending love with over 1,500 days worth of footage. “It’s just wonderful to be able to be a part of something so special and to tell the story of this magnificent animal that comes from my country — I was very honored,” Chopra Jonas said. “I have always loved tigers and I feel a kinship with the female tiger — I feel very protective of my family.” Now a young parent herself, she added: “Ambar’s journey is something I think every mom would really relate to.” With both features directed by Rob Sullivan (“America’s National Parks”), along with co-directors Mark Linfield (“Earth,” 2007), Vanessa Berlowitz (“Planet Earth”) and Alistair Tones (“Animals with Cameras, a Nature Minise- ries”), “Tiger” and “Tigers on the Rise” will be available to stream as of Monday, April 22, on Disney+. lifestyle Bengal beauty: ‘Tiger’ follows mother and cubs through unbelievable journey BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT Priyanka Chopra Jonas narrates “Tiger” reality tv BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT Kyle and Anika in “90 Day Fiancé: Love in Paradise” Passport to love: A return to ‘Paradise’ brings drama in ‘90 Day’ new season in focus “The Veil” (Hulu — April 30, Limited Series Premiere) This FX series explores the surprising and fraught relationship between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London. In what’s been one of the most competitive seasons in years, the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series has been nothing short of exhilarating, having produced three different points standings leaders in the first three races of the season for the first time since 2017. Amid a highly competitive season, Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell looks to have found his groove once again, holding a top-10 position among all drivers. Coming off a great month in March, Bell helped earn Toyota’s first win of the season at the 2024 Shriners Children’s 500, in- cluding putting himself firmly back in the playoff hunt. Having earned all seven of his career victories on differ- ent tracks, The Baby-Faced Assassin will look for some of that good luck to rub off this weekend as he’ll be facing tough competition against last year’s winner, Kyle Busch, after he managed to pull off a wild victory on the heels of Bubba Wallace Jr. and Ryan Blaney crashing in a battle for first place. Following their on-track dust-up at Circuit of the Amer- icas earlier this year, there will be no shortage of bad blood between the two, despite both drivers claiming to have put their crash behind them, with Busch potentially bringing a different approach when racing against Bell. “Run him harder for a little bit until he concedes that he’s sorry on the race track,” Busch said, speaking with NA- SCAR.com. “And then get back to normal.” Christopher Bell hunts for his second win of the year in Talladega Full name: Christopher David Bell Birthdate: Dec. 16, 1994 (29) Birthplace: Norman, Oklahoma Height/weight: 5-8/154 pounds Team(s): Joe Gibbs Racing, Toyota, No. 20 Honors and achievements: NASCAR Cup Series wins (Daytona International Speedway 2021, New Hampshire Motor Speedway 2022, Charlotte Motor Speedway 2022, Martinsville Speedway 2022, Bristol Motor Speedway 2023, Homestead- Miami Speedway 2023, Shriners Children’s 500 2024) player profile BY ROBERTO JOZEF sports zone contd. continued on page 9 in focus We’re here before and AFTER THE STORM!
