Q: I was surprised to see that though “Law & Order: Organized Crime” is returning, it will be moving from NBC to Peacock. What is the reason for that? – Roger Brace, via e-mail A: The ratings for the Christopher Meloni-starring drama have not been what NBC hoped for, even when it’s been directly partnered with the revived “Law & Order” and the enduring spinoff “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” — on which Meloni originated the role of Elliot Stabler — in crossover stories that played out on the same night. “Organized Crime” actually has fared better in streaming on Peacock, so in determining a future for the show, going the latter route seemed to make the most sense for the parties involved with the order for a fifth season (expected to consist of 10 episodes) While those used to watching the series on NBC might be less than pleased with the decision, there actu- ally is a precedent for it in executive producer Dick Wolf’s “Law & Order” universe. After NBC cut ties with “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” that program moved to the USA cable network and continued there for four more seasons. Q: It was great to see a night of Dustin Hoffman films on Turner Classic Movies recent- ly. Did he make his debut in “The Graduate”? – Martin Sherman, Terre Haute, Ind. A: That Oscar-winning 1967 comedy surely was his breakout proj- ect in terms of his getting wide attention and much more work after- ward, but Hoffman actually had appeared in one picture before that. He had a supporting role in the same year’s “The Tiger Makes Out,” which starred spouses Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson. Among others who got billing above Hoffman in that movie were Charles Nelson Reilly, Frances Sternhagen, David Doyle (“Charlie’s Angels”) and Elizabeth Wilson (who played Hoffman’s mother in “The Graduate”). Before moving into feature films, Hoffman did some television work earlier in the 1960s, around New York stage roles he had. He did guest parts on the acclaimed series “Naked City” and “The Defend- ers,” and he appeared with another pair of spouses (at least they were then) – Cliff Robertson and Dina Merrill – in “The Trap of Solid Gold,” an episode of the anthology “ABC Stage 67.” Q: With CBS having canceled “So Help Me Todd,” will it continue on another network? – Donna Keith, via e-mail A: Nothing of that nature was confirmed as of press time for this column, but the show was performing consistently in the ratings, something that can be of considerable when others might consider continuing a series. Still, the ratings for “Todd” were moderate, relatively speaking. With the commitments CBS had made for new hour-long programs for next season (“NCIS: Origins” and a “Matlock” reboot among them), awarding “Todd” a Season 3 renewal was far from a lock. Series creator Scott Prendergast made the end of the show sound like a completely done deal when he ended a social-media post about the CBS decision with the words, “And goodbye.” June 9 - 15, 2024 Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Karl Urban in “The Boys” Super powerful celebrity pipeline BY JAY BOBBIN ‘Law & Order’ spinoff is moving Christopher Meloni and Danielle Moné Truitt in “Law & Order: Organized Crime” Send questions of general interest via email to tvpipeline@gmail.com. New episodes drop weekly on Thursdays. Last season, “The Boys” thoroughly explored how and why superheroes (or “supes” as they’re called in the series) serving as mili- tary weapons is a recipe for disaster, before hinting at the political storylines that dominate this upcoming season. Victoria Neuman, por- trayed by Claudia Doumit (“Timeless”), was revealed to be a secret supe who has been using her powers to eliminate obstacles in her way as a congresswoman. This season, Victoria tries to step into the Oval Office while doing the bidding of an unrestricted, power-hun- gry supe. Antony Starr (“American Gothic”) is Homelander, who has become an unstop- pable force after learning last season that he can main- tain a loyal following no matter what awful things he does in plain view of every- one. Together, Homelander and Victoria stoke division and erode America’s democ- racy for their own gains. Returning this season are Karl Urban (“Thor: Ragnarok,” 2017) as Billy Butcher, Jack Quaid (“Op- penheimer,” 2023) as Hugh- ie Campbell, Erin Moriarty (“Jessica Jones”) as Annie January/Starlight, Jessie T. Usher (“Smile,” 2022) as Reggie Franklin/A-Train, Laz Alonso (“L.A.’s Finest”) as Marvin T. Milk, Chace Crawford (“Gossip Girl”) as Kevin Moskowitz/The Deep, Tomer Capone (“One on One”) as Serge/Frenchie, Karen Fukuhara (“Suicide Squad,” 2016) as Kimiko Miyashiro, Colby Minifie (“Fear the Walking Dead”) as Ashley Barrett and Cam- eron Crovetti (“Big Little Lies”) as Ryan. New additions to the cast are Susan Heyward (“Hello Tomorrow!”) as Sister Sage, Valorie Curry (“The Lost Symbol”) as Firecracker and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (“The Walking Dead”) in an as-yet-unnamed role. Mor- gan is no newcomer to the antihero scene, he starred as the Comedian in 2009’s “Watchmen” big screen ad- aptation. In an official trailer for the new season, Morgan’s character embraces Butcher and joins him for a drink with the two of them look- ing like old friends. Ter- minally ill after using too much of an experimental drug that temporarily boost- ed powers in the final show- down last season, Butcher is also on the outs with the rest of The Boys who have had it with his manipula- tions. The only way to keep Homelander and Victoria from destroying humanity is to get the band back togeth- er and take them on. “The Boys” is an adapta- tion of the popular comic book series of the same name by Gareth Ennis and Darick Robertson, pub- lished from 2006-2012. En- nis’ earlier work “Preacher” was also recently adapted into a four-season TV series on AMC, airing its final ep- isode in 2019. cover story ‘The Boys’ are back: Brand new season of anti- superhero series begins BY SARAH PASSINGHAM Susan Heyward in “The Boys” June 9 - 15, 2024 The Galveston County Daily News 3 Beloved “Vanderpump Rules” regular Ari- ana Madix shines as she takes on a new role, leading as the brand-new host of “Love Island USA,” kicking off its sixth season this Tuesday, June 11, with episodes streaming exclusively on Peacock. Madix — who joins comedian Iain Stir- ling, the franchise’s iconic narrator — is no stranger to reality television, even making a “Love Island USA” cameo last season, but the “Vanderpump” regular is now ready to visit the islands of Fiji long-term, as she hosts this season’s eager singles. Ahead of the season’s debut, Peacock shared a brief description of what’s to come — in- cluding the introduction of a brand-new “vibrant” villa and an unforgettable Hideaway. They say: “Islanders will face more drama than ever before with jaw-dropping revelations, brand-new couples challenges and even a few surprise guests. “Along the way” Peacock continues, “view- ers will be able to vote for their favorite cou- ples via the Love Island USA app to determine which islanders remain in the villa and who goes home heartbroken and empty-handed.” In a brief teaser trailer shared for Season 6, Madix is seen leaving the bright lights of “La La Land” and traveling to the island, with the teaser giving multiple nods to last summer’s film sensation, “Barbie” (2023). Upon arrival, Madix — dressed head to toe in hot pink — looks at the camera, winks, and asks, “Who’s ready to couple up?” The fun and fanciful theme has left some to wonder if the villa will be overrun by Kens and turned full “Mojo Dojo Casa House” or if this season’s Barbies will run the game. Throughout their stay in a tropical oa- sis, islanders will couple up to face new heart-racing challenges and bigger twists and turns than ever before. Temptations will rise and drama will ensue as new “bombshells” arrive, forcing the islanders to decide if they want to remain with their current partners or recouple with someone new. With new episodes dropping six days a week, all summer long, Season 6 of “Love Island USA” premieres Tuesday, June 11, on Peacock. Allowing viewers to ride the highs and lows of the world’s biggest bicycle race, Season 2 of “Tour de France: Unchained,” premieres Tues- day, June 11, on Netflix. Last June, Season 1 of “Unchained” allowed viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the 2022 Tour de France, with ample footage from the races and beyond. Accord- ing to a synopsis shared by Netflix, “from the riders to the team directors, ‘Tour de France: Unchained’ closely follows all those involved in the Tour, revealing the many challenges of a race that has become a real international symbol, broadcast in 190 territories. “This new season goes behind the scenes of the 21 stages of Tour de France 2023,” the synopsis contin- ues. “Amid the scandals, low blows and thirst for glory; amid the dramatic falls and historic breakaways; amid the withdrawals and desire to win: the series dives back into the fierce battle of the riders for the yellow jersey!” In a brief teaser trailer re- leased by Netflix, eagle-eyed viewers have noted that this next installment appears to be focused on the controver- sies and dueling personalities surrounding 2023’s edition of the Tour, with episodes showcasing the more “hard- core” nature of professional cycling. While the full list of teams that Season 2 will follow has yet to be announced, the Global Cycling Network has confirmed that the eight teams who appeared in the first series are set to return. Speed, passion and per- severance collide in Season 2 of “Tour de France: Un- chained,” premiering Tues- day, June 11, on Netflix. lifestyle Tour de force: Season 2 of cycling docuseries showcases ‘hardcore’ nature of sport BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT Wout van Aer as seen in “Tour de France: Unchained” reality tv BY CAROLINE COLLACUTT Ariana Madix hosts “Love Island USA” ‘Love Island’ returns: ‘Kens’ and ‘Barbies’ head to all-new villa for Season 6 in focus “House of the Dragon” - Season 2 (Max — June 16, Season Premiere) Based on George R.R. With the 2024 Formula One season in full throttle, Oscar Piastri is looking for his first victory of the year, continuing to build off of an impressive rookie campaign with McLaren in 2023. For McLaren — and, arguably, every team in competition — Red Bull remains the greatest barrier to victory in F1 racing. But McLaren drivers Piastri and Lando Norris have had stellar performances to be- gin the 2024 season. Norris, who has consistently remained in the top tier since entering F1, secured his first win of the season at the Miami Grand Prix and has earned multiple podium fin- ishes to boot. For his teammate Piastri, keeping the momentum going after a promising rookie year has also contributed significantly to the team’s overall success, with three fourth-place finishes (as of press time) bringing in some much-needed points. Going into this year’s Canadian Grand Prix, Piastri holds a top-10 position in the standings while trailing his teammate Norris, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and F1 2023 world champion Max Verstappen, who continues his dominance in 2024. As the F1 circus heads to Montreal, the stakes are only getting higher. Piastri’s 2024 season reflects his growth as a driv- er as he reaches closer to the reality of becoming a leading contender in F1. With continued support from McLaren and his relentless drive to improve, Piastri is set for more success as the season progresses.
